SDMB and their ADs

Jesus Christ the popups in mobile are ridiculous - Facebook-Walmart.com with no option other than to go to a shady ass website to “claim your prize” I see this on no other website that I visit and is making this one damn near unusable.

But did you claim your prize?

There’s an ATMB thread about problems with ads. If you have any technical details to add that will help us resolve this quicker, we’d appreciate it. If you prefe to complain about the ads here, that’s fair.

Since this is the Pit, I hope it isn’t threadshitting to say, just use a damn adblocker, already.

And, to keep it Pit-worthy, go carve a hole in a ghost pepper and stick your dick in it, (ummm…picking a name purely at random) Miller.

No option? How about becoming a member for a tiny amount of cash? I have an ad blocker AND a membership and I see no ads. None. Why do we have to keep having these conversations?

I don’t enjoy this board enough to justify spending money and that’s why I wasn’t using an ad blocker to view as a way of paying back something. But this is worse than a 1995 WAREZ site so ill begin doing so.

Whut whut whut whut?

You weren’t using an ad blocker to view this board? Normal people use browsers. How do you use an ad blocker to view a website? And how does NOT using an adblocker pay someone or something back? Do you owe somebody money because you use an adblocker?

A browser with a built-in adblocker. That’s how I view the Dope, and I see no ads at all. If there is a site that wants me to turn off my adblocker, I can turn it off for that site. There are several browsers available for both Android and iOS.

Also, since sites claim that ads help to pay their expenses, blocking them deprives them of revenue. People often turn off their adblockers in the belief they are helping to support the website. Some sites, not naming any in particular, have been known to serve up malware in their ads, though.

I’ve said this before in similar threads: Yes, IMHO it is threadshitting, and should be moderated as such. It’s like telling someone he should wear a hard hat all the time if he complains about someone dropping objects from high windows.

Ad blockers can wreak havok on some web pages.

Was not the Straight Dope Message Board one such site? Oh yes you said not to mention it. But I do seem to recall it happening.

And sometimes idiots like me need to be told a zillion times before they do the obvious thing to fix their problem.

Thanks for the non-threadshit, cochrane! Adblocker finally installed on my iPad.

Well, that is your opinion. And I don’t mention it in similar threads in ATMB. And adblockers wreak less havoc on the SDMB than the actual ads do. This site is unreadable without one. My adblocker stopped 33 instances of adware on this page alone. I can view a site without a content blocker if it asks me to do so. And since this is the Pit, I can also say go fuck a cactus.

Are there any adblockers for mobile devices, though? I can’t look at this site on my phone because it always gets hijacked. I haven’t found a mobile ad blocker that works.

If you join for less than the price of an extra-large pizza once a year, you won’t see ads on here no matter what device you use. Sorry to keep banging on this one but I don’t get why people who come here often for years don’t want to just join and solve the problem.

Because some of us refuse to cooperate with terrorists. “Just pay the membership or your device gets it!” is hardly a compelling argument. Especially after large numbers of us have, over the years, volunteered a considerable amount of expertise and time and money to substantially improve the site and have been snottily ignored. So, fuck it. This is what they wanted, this is what they got. Heckuva job, Zotti!

Nope. No appeasement! No Neville Chamberlaining my credit card

Firefox with uBlock Origin on an Android device works just fine. I think someone said that works in iOS, too, in another, similar, less ranty thread.

Occasionally, I accidentally navigate here with shields down and I’m really shocked how awful it is. The posters here are, by and large, pretty sophisticated, say compared to Yahoo! Answers or even Quora, but the ads are something out of a warez site or bad porn site. It’s really bizarre.

I don’t think the NY Times are constantly accidentally sending out malware to their readers.

There are no popup ads if you use Tapatalk.

To concentrate on the final sentence, it may be nobler or more open-handed, or a far far better thing than you ever did — to pay at every site on the Internet — but it doesn’t solve the problem.

The problem is not accidentally viewing ads which can mostly be avoided, but that the SDMB has such contempt for it’s readers it continually shows the vilest possible ads.
