SDMB and their ADs

But what are the toppings? Does the Pit come with extra sleaze?

To be fair, there are other benefits of joining. You get to put a cutesy phrase under your username, and you can be all judgy and morally superior with the freeloaders.

What’s your OS? I can recommend a couple of good ones for Android.

Go fuck a cactus, you stupid twat

We have long-time members die off; just last week we had a moderator hang up his jackboots & walk off (barefooted) into the sunset. When a noobie stumbles across this site & thinks, “Geez, this is worse than your average porn site.” Do you think they’re going to stick around, let alone take out a membership? The hijacks & pop-unders are slowly strangling this board.

Threadshitting in the pit would be posting, “puppies, kittens, rainbows”.

Motherfucker.

You could recommend them, regardless of what the OP uses, for general interest.

Thanks for being part of the SDMB and doing such a lovely job of “fighting ignorance”. I certainly do appreciate that you don’t feel like joining and paying a fee.

I’ll become a paying member when this site has a working search engine. That’s been my stance for the last umpteen years and, so far, I haven’t been in danger of paying.

Android. I’ve been using the Chrome browser. I’ve tried a couple of mobile popup blockers in the past without much success, but I don’t remember which ones. It’s been a while since I experimented with it.

Maybe you have me on ignore or something, but in post #18, I mention that Firefox with uBlock Origin works just fine to block ads on Android. I mean, I replied right to you.

Samsung Beta. You don’t need a Samsung device to install it, it works on any Android device. You have to install a separate adblocker, but the browser gives recommendations which ones will work with it. It completely blocks all ads on the Dope, and you can whitelist any site that asks you to turn it off.

Number 2 is Rocket Browser. It has a built in adblocker and also blocks everything from the Dope.

Both are available from the Play Store. And free.

I can make better pizza at home for way less money.

And for the umpteeth fucking time, the search engine is part of the vBulletin canned package and can’t be changed.

It’s always interesting to me how I pay two cents a day for this message board and feel that I get my money’s worth; and others pay nothing and feel ripped off.

Because no one likes to be shaken down. People shouldn’t have to pay for a working, functional website free of malware. They should be free from feeling extorted to keep the goons from wrecking the joint.

If TPTB want people to pay for a service they need to actually provide a service. It’s no good using a broken piece of software, having no customer support (the mods do what they can, but their powers have been heavily reduced over time), and the only communication being to set stupid rules (against the wishes of the members).

Maybe if they moved to a modern software package they could reach the level of just about every other free message board on the internet. It’s not technical issues stopping them fixing the search, just a lack of interest on their part.

Shaken down? My, what a snowflake.

If real-life mobsters threatened me in order to get me to pay them 2 cents a day, with a pretty solid commitment that the rate wasn’t going to increase, I would hesitate to call the cops about being blackmailed. Shaken down, ha.

The point is, people coming to the boards from, say, a Google search are less likely to join and pay for a subscription if they’re subject to all the pop-ups and browser hijacks they’re served with here. Make visiting here a positive experience, and they may pay their $14.95 to join. As it is now, there’s no incentive, unless you call paying for the privilege of not downloading malware an incentive. And a negative incentive is worse than none at all. As for me, I don’t see the added value in paying for a membership. I don’t care if I have a custom title, I don’t care if my location and posts are displayed, and I’m not selling anything in the Marketplace. And I already don’t see ads, and that’s the most important thing to me.

So far, I see seven ads in this thread. I’m running Android on my mobile device.

The ads are about a centimeter tall and are extremely unobtrusive.

The OP is also complaining about popups and being hijacked away from the site. That’s hardly unobtrusive.
