Joel Hodgson wants to bring back Mystery Science Theater 3000

(link goes to article, not to actual Kickstarter page)Joel Hodgson has started a Kickstarter campaign to bring back MSt3K. The initial goal is $2 million to produce 3 episodes, with stretch goals of $1.1 million to produce another 3 episode set, up to a total of 12 episodes. I want this to happen!

Please, please, yes.

My first Kickstarter I've donated to. I don't care if it is subpar. I just want this show to exist.

Here's a similar article from Minneapolis, the home of MST3K: Star-Tribune Is MST3K.... Not much different than the link above, but I'm willing to part with a few shillings to get this moving.

I hope they can actually get the guys from Rifftrax to join in and make it like the original. Doesn't mean Rifftrax has to stop.

Am a huge MSTie so I've been a bit like a headless chicken following this story today. A few things of note:

Shout! Factory, the company currently producing the MST DVD sets, now owns Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Also, Mike Nelson explains why he's not taking part in the revival. Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett are also on the record saying they're not interested.

Joel is currently doing a Reddit AMA with all kinds of info about the new series. Apparently he's already cast the host as well as the new Servo and Crow, and will be introducing them soon.

$500K to $600K per episode seems a bit steep, no?

Joel posted a graphic showing the breakdown of how they'll use the money. Only about a third of it goes to actually filming the three episodes.

As much as I loved MST3K, if it's not on HBO, Netflix or YouTube, I'll probably never see it. I'm not paying for another streaming service or getting cable TV to watch it.

The fantastic video rental place I've gone to for years is closing so rental may not be an option soon.

Since Shout! Factory now owns MST, I'm guessing you'll be able to buy the new episodes on disk, if you're so inclined.

This right here is why I don't want this to happen. I am already in the minority a bit because I liked Mike more than Joel anyway, but without Kevin and Bill? and without Mikes script supervision? No thanks.

This is a little disappointing as just last week I got an email from RiffTrax with a video from Mike Nelson himself saying how episodes of MST3K were now going to be available to stream from the RiffTrax site. When I saw this thread title I thought maybe they had merged in someway.

Dude, anyone other than Kevin as Servo would so not work. He'd be better off building new bots. (Would Trace be interested at least?)

I remember hearing a little about this some months back, but then nothing else, so I figured it didn't pan out. I'm glad to see it's still happening, although I think the ideal situation would be if they just hired the Incognito Cinema Warrior guys to make it. I think there stuff is actually better and more consistently funny than MST3K ever was. It's just everyone involved in that has day jobs, so there's like a year between each episode.

I'd check out the new show for sure, but this is more or less how I feel about it, too. I enjoy Joel, but I LOVE Mike (who was the head writer for the whole series, AFAIK). Without Mike, and Kevin?

I feel similarly. The later episodes are the ones I really enjoyed and without Mike, Kevin and Bill, I don't think it would be the same. But I do so love MST3K. I subscribe to the MST3K youtube channel and it's so nice to be able to watch some of the episodes in better quality than they used to be on youtube.

Ahem.

What I mean to say is that I think this might possibly be a good thing.

Also, if chance in its infinite wisdom caused me to win Powerball, I will donate at least $100 million to this project.

Interesting. I watched the Kickstarter video, but it wasn't clear (to me, at any rate) that Joel was not going to be hosting the new version. I thought that I recognized Trace Beaulieu's voice in the video as well, but maybe I was mistaken. I suspect their participation might be precluded by the same time and distance issues that caused Cinematic Titanic to go belly-up, but it is rather disappointing.

Not having Mike, Trace, or Kevin involved really does kind of dampen my enthusiasm for the project, although if it gets made I will probably check out at least a couple of episodes to see how it is. I'm not sure how much it will really feel like the MST3K of old, though.

I think they've found new voices for the bots that are passably close to the originals. The new Crow doesn't sound all that dissimilar to Trace. (Closer than Bill did anyway.)

We need to get it to $1 Billion, so Joel can Truman Show some kid into believing he's the Pumaman.

There's a small part of me that thinks this was started because I said I liked Mike better. It's probably unfounded, but I like to feel important

I will be jumping on the KS at some point, and I'm excited - but count me amongst the folks who felt the Mike years were the best, and without Trace, Kevin, Mike, Bill, or Frank it makes me a little nervous.

Joel's a funny, talented guy. And I'm sure he can put together a good team. But will it feel different? Can they capture the lightning in the bottle again?

New host? I thought Joel would host and they re-voice the robots. Joel isn't even going to be back in character on the ship?

Joel says he wants to give himself some kind of cameo, but otherwise, no, the intention is to have all-new characters as host and Mad.

I'm happier that Joel is rebooting with a new <strike>victim</strike> host and new robots (he suggested that the old voices could reappear as a cameo and blame it on faulty programming). In his latest post, he likened it to bringing in a new cast on SNL, which makes sense. Younger writers would be free to bring their own taste and references into it, so expect more references to Kardashians and fewer about Jack Benny.

Very cool. Even though I want the original people to be in it, I will give this a shot.

The closest we have now aside from Rifftrax is probably "Best of the Worst". Anyone else watch that show online? The guys watch 3 crappy movies, discuss them in entertaining ways, and choose which one is the best of the worst. Very entertaining. I highly recommend it.

How cool is that? Gotta love Kickstarter.
