After our Thanksgiving dinner last night, for reasons beyond me, my aunt played us two episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000. I’d never seen it before in my life, though I’d heard about it constantly. I knew there was a guy and two creatures/robots that sat in the theater cracking wise about the cheesy movies playing.
So I saw it, and it sucked. My dad fell asleep, I tried to wake him up, he went back to sleep 5 minutes later, and then I fell asleep. That’s how boring it was. The wisecracks from the fake guys in the audience weren’t witty or funny at all, in my opinion, and they talked too much, so much that you couldn’t concentrate on the humorously bad movie.
It would have been better, I think, to just compile old shitty movies and then watch them without 3 annoying fake guys in the “theater” making jokes that AREN’T FUNNY.
Here’s the question: did I watch the wrong episodes?
The episodes I saw were 1, a film called “A Date with the Family,” about etiquitte for family dinners, and 2, something about “Housewives of the Future,” a ‘training video’ for girls teaching them to be housewives.
I thought the movies were kind of funny, since they were so awful, but I absolutely could not stand the jerk-off guys in the “theater.” Everything they said sounded like it came from the mouth of that sardonic hipster guy in your photography class with the black-framed glasses and the tight-ass jeans.
I love the show, but it’s very hit-or-miss. And it’s an acquired taste. Not many of my friends like it. One friend will laugh until he pisses himself. Literally. Needless to say, his wife doesn’t allow it in the house.
I think you really need the right type of sense of humor to get into it. I’m not the type that enjoys bad movies for their badness. If it’s a bad movie, then it’s just bad, no enjoyment can come of it. The type of humor I appreciate is taking normal situations and making them ridiculous and absurd, which is what MST3K typically does.
You’re not alone in your dislike. I’ve tried watching a number of times and have yet to find one that I can sit through without wanting to gouge my eyes out and eat them. A lot of my friends like it though.
I think it might depend on the Experiment too. I have never made it through “I Accuse My Parents” but I could watch “Jack Frost” and “Space Mutiny”(She’s presenting like a mandrill!), and “Side Hackers” over and over. And I think everybody should watch “Wild World of Bat Woman” because it’s good to question your own sanity every once in awhile.
Well, unless I’m mistaken, the episodes you name are from season 6… with… erg… Mike Nelson. This is just IMHO, but he annoys me to death. I love MST3K, but only, only, only the episodes with Joel Hodgeson. He was the original guy… he’s only there until season 5, I think.
Anyone can jump in and correct me at any time, I could be wrong. It’s been a long, long time. I miss Joel.
No offense to Mike fans, I just find him cocky and annoying… Joel was just more… subtle, and clever, IMHO only, of course! My favourite will always be Tom Servo… and hey, Christmas is coming! Time to bust out the delightful “Patrick Swayze Christmas”, written by Crow T. Robot… ahhh, memories!
You are entirely aware of the fact that Mike Nelson was head writer of the show from around 1990 on, right? IMNSHO, Mike Nelson is one of the funniest people alive.
I think that MST3K is really, really funny and people think I am weird because of it.
I discovered it in the video store and I have not watched a single episode of that show without laughing.
One of my favorites was “Eegah” that was a funny episode. The fact that I think MST3K is so hilarious is my nerdish side coming out.
Well, I’d be perfectly willing to try more, like the ones from other seasons. After all, it wasn’t hell, I just thought it was a little boring. Shit, Season 3 of the Sopranos had some boring-ass episodes, that doesn’t mean the whole series is bad. I’ll give it a shot.
I also find that my first viewing of an Experiment generally isn’t that funny. It’s actually a little complicated- you have to keep track of the movie plus keep track of the comments, which tend to come quickly and sometimes be a little subtle. Sometimes I have to watch two or three times before I have it all put together and suddenly start laughing until I roll off of the sofa and alarm the cat.
