Posters who love to bring up the same things time and again

Ah, missed that. Probably a moderator mistake.

It’s a weird thing, knowing how much info to give about yourself in any given thread. I lurk more than I post, and I doubt that anyone really remembers my name, much less relevant information about me that might pertain to my perspective on the subject at hand. So I feel like I mention stupid shit, like that I live in the middle of nowhere, too much. Maybe a couple of people on the board know this about me already, but probably most don’t. So if it matters, I’ll say it again, wondering if I sound like a broken record.

There are several posters who I know a lot about because they’re interesting (including the aforementioned Even Sven, whose stories I always enjoy.) They have really different perspectives than I do. They’ve done different things. Threads like this seem to be kind of shaming them for having areas of interest and expertise, and I think that’s much worse than posting frequently on topics that a person knows about and is interested in.

Bryan Ekers always brings up that old story of burying that French man in a shallow grave. What was his name? Oh yea, Jean Luc

Yeah, I think she even got voted “most changed for the better poster” in some thread a few years back. Plus, she’s a very good writer, so it’s hard to fault her for relaying her experiences.

Is the OP’s point that some folks seem to have specific topics they like to comment/rant about, or is it simply that they’ve told us enough about their lives, through their choice of comments, that we think we know a bit about them.

IOW, from reading and e.g even sven’s posts I’ve learned that she’s a world traveler, and not just to the touristy parts. But that’s a good thing I’ve learned.

What I haven’t heard from her is anything like this: that she’s obsessive about being the only poster with a clue about central Africa, or the only one with mud-hut living experience or the one who insists that tribal wisdom has something to teach us about 21st century suburban living.

So there OP, what is your point? I’m not trying to snark or call you out, I just don’t know what question you’ve asked so I don’t know what answer to give.

All I can say is that it has been a very long 16 years (goodness!) and you guys have given a lot of perspective to someone who isn’t always great at having perspective.

(Also, my job has taken a turn for the worse, so less smugness can be expected shortly.)

In case you’re feeling self-conscious. …

The last couple posts ahead of mine weren’t there when I loaded the thread. I hope you aren’t feeling piled-upon.

I picked you as an example of a good poster with a distinctive life worth hearing about, not as an example of a bad poster with an obsessive axe to grind.

Good luck with the job situation. My SIL just bailed on a dream job that management turned from dream to nightmare in 2 months flat. I feel your pain.

That sucks; sorry to hear it.

Yeah; this should really be in MPSIMS - I think we get that a few folks have their…habits. Although, while we are still in the Pit, can I point out that Amateur Barbarian’s favorite thing to bring up time and again is himself? But only sotto voce, mind you.

If by “by and large” you mean “no way in hell,” then I agree.

I’m very glad to learn that you’re trying to get better.

But, it isn’t exactly saying “anyways” too much that you’re known for.

You know, unless I’m mistaken. I’ve been mistaken before.*

*Just not about the death penalty being morally wrong always and everywhere; “illegal” never being decently used as a noun; the Designated Hitter and MLB regular season inter-league play being abominations; oysters, turnips, and liver not being made out of food; Adam West being the only legitimate Batman; and the 1967 version of Casino Royale being the definitive and final film of the Bond franchise.

No; I mean that I have no cause to doubt her words.

So I suspect that you disagree.

Oh man, don’t even get me started.

Turnips rule, dude.

Never said they don’t.

Although, I’m sure I couldn’t tell you why they do.

Erm, hope this isn’t an ego-blow, but the only Dopers that I always remember are Scots are Baron Greenback - because he and I have discussed Doctor Who, and his username used to be Struan, a name that always catches my attention - and Pjen, who’s a Englishwoman who moved to Scotland and embraced Scottishness with all the fervor of a convert. Not sure about Claverhouse, but his username suggests it.

On the other hand, I do recall your name coming up sometime ago when that garbage truck crashed in Glasgow, and folks were worriedly asking about Scottish Dopers. I remember someone pointed out you live in Edinburgh, so I know that about you, anyway.

I’ll remember your nationality from now on, though. But you could help by maybe every now and again posting aboot gaein’ doon to the shops for an Irn Bru.

As for that ass Slow Moving Vehicle, he always mentions that he’s from the South, is not nearly as witty as he thinks he is, and overuses italics.

I do often worry I talk about it too much. I try to limit it, but it’s what I know. I do talk about movies and books, too.

Then you have the critical thinking skills of a kumquat.

I suspect Rigamarole was talking about your username.

Oh good grief!

People have shit that they talk about. Qadgop is renowned for popping up in medical threads, cos, y’know, he’s a fucking DOCTOR!

Similarly Zev Steinhart can be relied on to bring up a Hamantaschen thread every year! Hi Zev!

We know that Stoid is neurotic about pitbulls, and that Shayna is fond of them too. We know that Foggy suffers from depression, and that** lieu** is somewhat of a shitty poster! I must admit, lieu has been less shitty in the last ten years…he’s moved on from that movement!

I could add umpteen other posters with their ‘thing’ but this is what makes us a community, and not just a bunch of pixels on a screen. We have personalities and we have HISTORY. Don’t you have RL friends who forever bring up their same problems every time you meet? The same dramas, the same shit each and every time?? I certainly do, and I love them all the same!

Now that’s the ego-blow, please, I’m Glaswegian born and bred!

And I was in Glasgow that afternoon, very scary atmosphere.
