Pioneer Quest: A Year in the Real West (PBS)

I saw the first episode of this series on PBS last night. It’s a little like Frontier House, in that they take some folks and set them up to live on the Canadian prairie, 1870’s style.

The difference here is, it’s only two couples, and they’re aiming on staying out for 1 full year. If they make it, they get $100,000. (I’m not sure if it was $100,000 apiece or per couple.)

I’m a real sucker for these history reenactment shows. The first show was basically a setup episode. They showed picking the contestants, getting outfitted, learning to drive horses, etc. However, there was one BIG surprise with one of the couples:

The husband in the older couple was charged with sexual assault the day before the Year on the Prairie started, and they had to leave after just one day. They have a replacement couple coming in for the next show, and they look like perfect pills to me.

Anybody else see this? I’m going to be watching this one with interest.

Hmmm…didn’t see that one, but saw the setup episode for 1900 House on our local PBS channels.

This was on Canadian TV about 2 or 3 years ago. So yes, I’ve seen it.

I love this show! It’s a great show, and they went on to do more shows like it, such as “Klondike, the Quest for Gold” and “quest for the Bay” No one gets voted off. I like shows like that.

Stephi, I kinda figured this was a “check your local listings for air time” deal. It just started here in Georgia.

I’ll keep an eye out for the other ones. I love to see modern people floundering without modern technology.

(I wouldn’t be any different, except I know how to spin and weave and make a bowstring (but not a bow–yet) and might be able to knock out a flint blade if my life depended on it.)

Yes, as Stephi mentioned, this show played on the Canadian History channel a couple of years ago. Great show–my wife and I were glued to every episode.

I’ll try not to spoil it for anybody, so I guess I won’t say much. But I will say, Archergal, that they didn’t exactly “flounder.” They did pretty well with what they were given, although they did hit some rough spots. Keep watching; it can be rather compelling.
