I’ve been seeing promos for a movie called “Decoys” that premieres Saturday on the SciFi Channel that looks like it was heavily inspired by tentacle anime like “Demon Beast Invasions.” Except, of course, this being a live action film, and this being a made for public cable TV movie, and this being America and all, the tentacle monsters are women and their victims are men, and I don’t think we’re gonna have any tentacle rape scenes. Lotsa tentacle death during sex, though.
I’m kinda interested if only because the imagery in the promos are so clearly inspired by anime. I’ve never seen anything I can think of in American SF that so clearly picked up on Japanese anime. Closest thing I can think of is the alien in “Alien” who definitely had some tentacle-ish features – such as tentacles. But nothing with people transforming into tentacle monsters. Be worth checking out.
There was the movie Robot Jox (live action), and I think there was another movie of the similar concept which had giant mechs fighting it out. Not quite on the same scale as tentacle porn, but than again, what is?
OK, I caught Decoys last night, and as I thought, it did borrow a lot from Japanese anime wrt the tentacle monster thing. They did get one thing very, very, very wrong, though.
The people who get tied up with tentacles and have tentacles shoved up their bodily orifices in Japanese anime are almost always female. Whereas in Decoys they’re all male. Um, way to go guys, you completely missed the whole appeal of tentacle porn which is an extended sexual bondage riff. (Obviously, if you’re gay, YMMV here).
I’m not at all surprised the film tanked at the box office and with the critics. I was all set to expound on an interesting Canadian take on Japanese tentacle anime but they fucked up so badly in this regard that there’s really not a hell of a lot to say about it.
A real shame, because every last female in this film (it’s about a sorority of women who turn into tentacle monsters) is absolutely fucking gorgeous.
