Not necessarily my top favorites, just some I really like a lot.
See what other movies these themes make you think of and then post some audio (video) from your favorites, too.
How quickly can we get to 100 movies?
Here are the first ten:

With apologies to Franz Waxman and Max Steiner (neither of whom are well-represented on YouTube):
The Adventures of Robin Hood (Erich Wolfgang Korngold)
Alexander Nevsky (Sergei Prokofiev)
The Big Country (Jerome Moross)
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Henry Mancini)
Conan the Barbarian (Basil Poledouris)
Contempt (Georges Delerue)
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (Bernard Herrmann)
Is Paris Burning? (Maurice Jarre)
Juliet of the Spirits (Nino Rota)
The Lion in Winter (John Barry)
Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure (Danny Elfman)
Under Fire (Jerry Goldsmith)
Lalo Schiffrin - Cool Hand Luke
Paul Newman - Cool Hand Luke - “Plastic Jesus”
Bullitt opening title sequence <<< music starts at 0:43 >>>
The Ecstasy of Gold, from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Ennio Morricone)
The main theme kicks ass, too.
The Natural - Randy Newman (you have to wait until 3 minutes in or so)
Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Sigur Ros
The Keep (music starts about 1 minute in) - the music by Tangerine Dream just sucks you into the film.
Some awesome music here…
The last piece of movie music I remember being especially impressed with is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEqEra1Lwuk&fmt=18 this from the Ratatouille end credits.
That is one powerful video! And you’re right about being sucked into it. I went to Netflix to put it at the top of our queue and it’s not there!
At The Keep (1983) there were these comments:
But thanks for whetting my appetite. If you happen to notice it being on TV any time in the future, please bump this thread with a note to that effect.
Great find!
The Usual Suspects Opening Credits
Same song, same singer, more upbeat pictures:
We’ll Meet Again Vera Lynn
Three French movies:
La Gloire de Mon Pere. My Father’s Glory
Since Zeldar has already mentioned Chinatown, let me add another great one by Jerry Goldsmith: Patton
And since there’s been a mention of Tangerine dream, I give you Sorcerer!!
eta: Those scenes from Sorcerer were done before CGI!
You people have opened my eyes to Tangerine Dream! My only real exposure to them was in Risky Business and the train sequence. This video has a totally different feel to the visuals, but the music is familiar.
Labdad, that Scheider tribute is moving. Thanks for it. And there’s more Goldsmith to be mined as well.
