Next week is Drum Solo Week on Letterman!

Rejoice!

Here’s the lineup.

What do you think? Obviously, I’m goddamn pleased as fucking punch about them rounding out the week with the Professor. And I really dig Sheila E. and Roy Haynes. And and it’ll be cool to see the World’s Most Dangerous Band’s/CBS Orchestra’s own Anton Fig show off his stuff. In short, I’ll be loving next week.

So, again … thoughts? Got a dream lineup (or more than one) should this (oh, please, oh, please) become an annual thing?

Thanks for the heads-up! I haven’t watched Letterman in some time. I’ll at least DVR it for the drums.

Too bad Morello won’t be there!

Others they could add for my tastes:

Steve Gadd - YouTube
Omar Hakim 127 Hours (2010) - IMDb
Bernard Purdie Bernard Purdie - Soul Drums - YouTube
Billy Cobham - YouTube

I checked the list ready to dismiss it if **Neil Peart **was not on it. I wasn’t disappointed. No better drummer to close out the week.

My bad on Omar! Omar Hakim - Drum solo - YouTube

Anton Fig (Drum Solo) With The CBS Orchestra - David Letterman 6/6/11 - HD 720p

Letterman briefly had Tony Weiner on last night. His snare solo was, as you might expect, unbelivable.

I caught the last half or so of Sheila E. - damn, that woman can play!

Sheila’s been the best so far, IME. I was a touch disappointed in Roy Haynes’ solo … but then, he was only given, like, the last four minutes of the broadcast to perform.

Here’s hoping that Neil Peart sets the Ed Sullivan Theatre ablaze tonight (and that he does something other than an abbreviated version of “Der Trommler”).

Also, Zeldar: Some danged solid suggestions for (hopeful) future editions of this feature up top.

I think what ruined Haynes’s slot was that damned horn! Couldn’t hear the drums for that stupid thing.

I’ll be voting for Anton if Neil doesn’t kick some major butt!

BTW, thanks for the kind words.

We need us a Best Drummer Ever poll, what say?

I agree; more musical AND performed in a minidress and high (high!) heels. She’s a damn good player from a damn good musical family.

I, for one, could and would get behind this notion wholeheartedly.

Let’s start gathering potential names here, then. After we get 30 or so we can post a poll.

Add to:

Joe Morello
Philly Joe Jones
Buddy Rich
Gene Krupa
Jimmy Cobb
Shelly Manne

favorites from List of jazz drummers - Wikipedia

Of those mentioned I have seen Peart, Sheila E, Omar Hakim, and Steve Gadd play up close.

I got a lesson from Gadd and Sheila E (at different times) at Veneman’s music on Rockville Pike back in the 80s. Damn, that girl can really bring it. Gadd held a rhythm better (I thought at the time) but Sheila E knew how to get people moving.

Max Roach!

Letterman scheduled this theme about three months too late :frowning:

We shouldn’t exclude rock drummers. I just don’t know all that many as well as the jazz guys.

Butch Trucks
Jaimoe
Ringo

I’d add my personal favorites:

Stewart Copeland
John Bonham
Manu Katché
Terry Bozzio
Dave Weckl
Carter Beauford
Mitch Mitchell
Pete Moon
Carl Palmer
Bill Bruford
Mike Portnoy
Dave Lombardo
Vinnie Colaiuta
Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson

We’re getting a sizeable list started. I’m wondering if other genres, including Drum & Bugle Corps types, should be considered. Do we maybe need several categories?

That sounds pretty boss. I have shockingly little knowledge about such, but I’m more than eager to be pointed in the right direction by any and all who are in the know about Drum & Bugle Corps types.

Well, all I personally know about the D&BC world is that there are some remarkable performers! I can’t name a single name, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some Dopers who can. I’m not even intimately familiar with entire corps, but I could name a few. Cavaliers, Phantom Regiment, Spirit of Atlanta, maybe others whose names aren’t coming to mind immediately but whom I’ve seen on TV competitions.

Maybe http://www.dci.org/ (specifically Drum Corps International: Marching Music`s Major League and http://www.dci.org/tour-of-champions/ ) would help?

The issue to be addressed, perhaps, is whether we have an open “All Drummers” thing or several subgroups like Jazz, Rock, Latin, World, D&BC, and others that may be noteworthy. Except for a precious few individuals in other categories, my names would mostly come from the Jazz group.

I’d really love to see other posts from other people before we make any major decisions on poll or polls. I’d like to know a lot more abiut the drumming world and conversation on the topic(s) could be educational and fun.

YouTube and similar clips to point to specialists would be great as well.
