Daniel Craig is back… Javier Bardem will play the villain… and Sam Mendes to direct… out in a year… FTW!!!

I like the idea of a new tougher James Bond. That being said, I completely lost the plot in the recent movie. All those people in Italian rooftops shooting at each other, what was that about?

It’s called Skyfall, by the way.

Now we only have to wait a year…

Of course Wiki already has an article: Skyfall - Wikipedia

And of course, there’s already been a Cafe Society thread:

At least the title isn’t as bad as “Quantum of Solace.” Though it’s pretty bad.

Merged the thread and combined the thread titles.

Through the years some of the villains have been, well, less than objectionably villainous. I really don’t see that as being a potential issue with Bardem.

Ralph Fiennes as an “unnamed villain” as well.

I’m tentatively excited about this! Casino Royale (the newer one) easily ranks amongst the best the series has to offer. The action shots were amazing and the story was tight. It also boasted a smarter dialog than previous films most notably when Eva Green and Daniel Craig meet on the train. Quantum of Solace suffered in comparison but it’s still significantly better than any of the Roger Moore / Pierce Brosnan films. James Bond is going through a resurgence and I hope this one keeps in line with the new direction of the series.

Dammit! I looked over CS’s p. 1 and searched for the term “Skyfall,” and still didn’t see it.

So come on, let’s put on our predicting hats!

What will be the villain’s plot? High finance, espionage, terrorism, or space hijinks?

I predict from the title that our criminal mastermind is going to divert an asteroid to fall on Westminster Palace and provoke a massive earthquake / flooding of lowland areas. The mastermind, of course, will be sheltered from all this as he hovers in his blimp over the Ural mountains, laughing diabolically in Russian. Little does he know that MI6 is on the case!

ETA: villain is a Russian gangster that got hold of some space technology via under-the-table sales from impoverished or greedy Russian scientists and astronauts. The Russian government will aid Bond in his efforts.

I really liked “Casino Royale”, but I was also confused by “QoS”. I give it kudos for more realistic villainy. (I mean how many megalomaniacs can really come within a button push of destroying the entire world?) Still, I can’t really remember what crime they were trying to do … something about the water supply? Also, the tight focus and cut shots made it hard to see what was happening.

Bonds tend to start out tough and become silly. I hope Daniel Craig doesn’t end up surfing into North Korea, driving an amphibious gondola out of a Venetian canal, or bear-hugging Bambi and Thumper in a jacuzzi to nullify their kung fu.

1 - Me too!
2 - Definitely.
3 - Heheh. “How is your lamb?” “Skewered. One sympathizes.”
4 - Well… I think The Spy Who Loved Me is better than Quantum of Solace. And although it’s Bondian heresy to praise Moonraker, it does have that kickass boat chase sequence in the Brazilian rainforest. I also would say Tomorrow Never Dies and GoldenEye were better than QoS, but of course YMMV.
5 - Most definitely.

With lots of cut shots of a drunk onlooker staring in disbelief at his liquor bottle.

You can commit Bondian heresy - I have my own to admit to! I think “On Her Majesties Secret Service” is an exceptional movie; George Lazenby is a good Bond whose only real crime was having to follow Sean Connery; it has the best Bond Girl in the entire series; and the ski scenes are top notch. What amazes me most about the ski scenes was a special feature on the DVD about how they filmed those - the close up shots of the skiiers coming at you was filmed by a man skiing backwards on those same hills while holding a film camera. Crazy - the guy with the most talent gets the least recognition!

Quantum of Solace was about the evil Baron trying to control the water supply of Arakis by hoarding it in huge underground basins, and selling it to the people at jacked up prices. Fortunately, Bond was able to sneak in, rescue the woman, kill the villains, and restore justice and water to the Fremen, and make it rain.

Or something like that.

I grew up watching Roger Moore do Bond - specifically, watching the first half of Bond movies. I don’t know how many times I saw Moonraker up to the point of the cable car wipeout with Jaws, and then had to go to bed.

Brosnan wasn’t a bad Bond, but I was just totally burned out with the concept and the over-the-top ridiculousness that was inherent by then. Casino Royale was a much needed reboot, that dropped the extreme farce. I really like the direction change, even if Quantum of Solace was not quite up to the same caliber.

I am looking forward to this movie.

Everybody lost the plot of Quantum of Solace. Something about water in Bolivia I think.

I was really looking forward to Quantum of Solace, especially as it was my favorite Flemming title from years ago when I read all the books (I liked the title; not the story, though). Alas, even though the movie had absolutely nothing to do with the short story, it was every bit as boring.
