It’s not about the dope, it’s more the degree of snarky certitude they have that it’s absolutely, positively her and any denials are just arm waving PR. And yet readers of the article disagree on the ID.
I don’t think it’s her. There’s a general resemblance, but yeah, the chick’s nose is slightly too long. Also, that girl looks like she’s around 19 or 20-something, which means if it was Brooke it would have been in the mid-80s (she was born same year I was, 1965) and that photograph just doesn’t look right for that era.
Plus Brooke Shields’ squeaky clean image has always held up to scrutiny. She’s never been involved in any kind of scandal (other than posing nude at 10(!) but that was her exploitive mother’s doing). None of her friends or even friends of friends or anyone in show business has ever even tried to imply otherwise.

Second response - no, it is not her. The woman in the picture bears a resemblance, but it’s not her.
Here is Brooke in the 80s. Here is another image of a young Brooke. Here is another magazine cover with her face in a similar angle. The cheeks, nose, jaw, and eyebrows aren’t right.
So why would this image surface now? Answer: the guy in the picture is “H.R.”, a member of the band “Bad Brains”, which just happens to be gearing up for a new record due in November. Hey look, H.R. is in a picture with a girl who resembles a fairly famous actress with a squeaky cleam image. We can get a lot of publicity out of smearing tar everywhere. Just in time so someone will actually have heard if Bad Brains when the record releases.
I’ve always liked Brooke. This is lame and pathetic. I’d boycott Bad Brains and H.R. but then I’ve never heard of them before, so I’m already doing a pretty good boycott.
Here is an uncropped version of the same photo. Whoever it is, it looks like H.R. is falling in love with her elbow. But something about the addition of the legs makes it look even less like her to me than the cropped version.
H.R.'s publicist insists that it was definitely her. The band has the same manager today who says he remembers the occasion. Her publicist vehemently denies that it was her. It’s hard to understand why either side would lie or think they couldn’t be easily proven wrong by the other side. If it isn’t her she will probably sue so I guess time will tell.
Based solely on the photo it could be her but it also wouldn’t be surprising if it isn’t. The same can be said about almost any two other photos of her due to different makeup, lighting, hairstyle, airbrushing, etc.
One point that might not be widely known and tends to add a little plausible context to the claim is that she was an avid punk rock enthusiast/groupie in her teens. Here’s an early, and somewhat creepy, interview with her at 12 on Efrom Allen’s Underground. It was made in the middle of a photo shoot she was doing for an album cover with Stiv Badders and the Dead boys. Later on, possibly about the same time as the alleged photo with H.R. she opened a punk radio show every night at some radio station. So it is quite plausible for a teenage Brooke Shields to have been backstage or sitting in a radio station break room with a punk rocker during that time, squeaky clean image today or not. And it is quite likely, if not pretty much guaranteed, drugs were being used in those venues at the time either right in front of her or with her participation.
If it is her, I would never have recognised her from that shot.
Seems to me a 20-ish girl who looks like Brooke Shields would be welcome at any backstage party. I don’t get the surprise.
