Movies worthy of repeat viewing

A recent thread about A Few Good Men got me thinking: what movies do you find have a high “replay” value… that is, they are the kind of movie that you can watch over and over again and still enjoy… if you’re channel flipping you’ll stop even if the movie is half over and watch the rest… the kind that are worth owning on DVD or Blue-Ray (rather than just renting or seeing once in the theatre). Some of mine that fall into that category (besides the above mentioned):

Talladega Nights
The Hunt for Red October
Armageddon
Apollo 13
Tommy Boy
The Wizard of Oz
Pitch Perfect
Lord of the Rings trilogy
Grease

If you’re so inclined, feel free to mention movies that, while you find to be very good, do NOT have that “replay” value (just remember to specify for which category you are nominating). No sense in mentioning bad movies that you could barely get through once (although certain bad movies might qualify, like “Rocky Horror Picture Show”)

Bonus points if you can articulate what makes the movie re-watchable/not re-watchable.

Groundhog Day
Air Force One

Trains, planes and automobiles. It is crazy funny every time I watch it.

Off the top of my head…

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

Wait until Dark

The Sea Hawk

A Shot in the Dark

Princess Bride

Hudson Hawk

*Yes, trilogy. Crystal Skull can suck it. Temple of Doom was borderline.

Jerry Maguire
Snatch
Kill Bill vol. 1
Murder by Death
Tommy Boy
Love Actually
The Addams Family / Values

To me, these movies all either retain some freshness or offer new bits and pieces upon each rewatch.

Road Warrior
Princess Bride
School of Rock
Count of Monte Cristo
Sin City
Bull Durham

That is too funny. That scene is going to be a little less sexy for me now, but it’s worth it.

Mean Girls. Tina Fey is a genius at it.

Just about every movie I really like is worth watching at least a second time, because I will inevitably miss some details the first time.

Chinatown (Nicholson)
The Ice Harvest (Cusack, Thornton)
Sling Blade (Thornton)
The Last Detail (Nicholson)
Young Frankenstein (Blucher!)
Unforgiven (Eastwood)
Stand By Me (River Phoenix, Kiefer Sutherland)

Movies I’ve burned out on:
Star Wars series
The Matrix series
LOTR
Good, Bad, Ugly
Dirty Harry series
Platoon
Apocalypse Now

The only one that comes to mind that I don’t rewatch is Avatar. It made wonderful use of the 3D cinema experience, but it does not translate well to watching it in 2D on a computer screen.
