I work for a nonprofit organization and recently found a college student who is willing to create a video (one to start with, maybe more in the future) for us. A quick internet search brings up lots of different contracts that I could use, except for a minor issue:
They all assume the video is “work for hire” or something sold for one (or two) parties to profit from. So not really the same as our need. We want to retain the right to use the video for fundraising and education of our constituency, and we want the volunteer to retain the copyright to her video and to use it in her portfolio to look for paid work. She’s currently a student, not yet a professional videographer/filmmaker.
If there are any filmmakers here, I’d like your thoughts. Can I take a standard “work for hire” contract and modify it to fit our needs?
