Pre-Poll Data Collecting -- FEMALE Westerns Stars

In spite of the 70+ posts that were contributed to Pre-Poll Data Collecting – Westerns Stars– which had been active from 04-02-2015 03:10 PM until (#72) - 05-04-2015, 06:52 PM – it took this elegant post in Your Top 5 All-Time Westerns Stars – which has been active since 04-21-2015, 10:38 AM – for me to realize that, with a few exceptions, the focus of that effort has wound up being predominantly MALE!

I’d like to try to correct that!

I almost called this thread Westward the Women after an old movie I saw as a kid, but you get the idea, I hope.

Please add some names of the ladies and girls who contributed more than a little bit to the success of TV and Movie Westerns over the years. After a sizeable number have been submitted, I’ll crank up yet another poll on the subject.

Sorry it’s taken so long! Thanks, Johanna!

For starters, how about:

Mercedes McCambridge
Betty Hutton
Jean Simmons
Joan Crawford
Susan Hayward

… and surely you know of many others.

Dale Evans seems an obvious inclusion?

Yes! In fact, if you were to say to almost anybody over 50, “name me a cowgirl” (or whatever term is best for a “female westerns star”) odds are she would be the first or one of the first five to be named.

Queen of the Cowgirls!

Mildred Natwick in She Wore A Yellow Ribbon.

Also Joanne Dru was in half a gillion westerns, right?

Big Valley TV show had Linda Evans and Barbara Stanwick

Amanda Blake from Gunsmoke

Madeline Kahn.

They may not have done all that many specific Westerns but the ones they did made an impression on me:

Jane Russell
Sharon Stone
Rhonda Fleming
Virginia Mayo
Maureen O’Hara
Jean Peters
Sondra Locke
Angie Dickinson

Hannah Caulder - Raquel Welch
Shane - Jean Arthur
Belle Star - Gene Tierney

While not remembered as a “westerns girl”, Marilyn was in River of no Return.

Well, when Mel Brooks made Blazing Saddles, who was the only female Western icon he could think of to lampoon?

Marlene (Destry Rides Again) Dietrich!

I rather liked Jodie Foster’s character in Maverick.

Thank you, Zeldar. After Katy Jurado, I’m fond of the cast of Bad Girls. Madeleine Stowe in particular. Barbara Stanwyck is a slam dunk, obviously, but already counted above. Then there’s Dana Delany in Tombstone. Oh my God, Dana Delany. Yes. Plus Joanna Pacuła for good measure.

ETA: I second the nomination for Jodie Foster.

Mustn’t leave out Tantoo Cardinal!

TV time

Gail Davis as Annie Oakley.
Jane Seymour as Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.
Does anybody remember Elizabeth Montgomery in The Awakening Land?
You shouldn’t have gotten me started.

She also belongs here for The Plainsman.

Actresses in Westerns who were Westerners: Linda Darnell, Joan Crawford, Vera Miles

Jane Fonda in Cat Ballou

Not bad for a day’s work! Let’s get some more…
