10/3 @ 2:18PM...Anyone turning off their phone? [Presidential alert test]

I’m not pursuing the matter repeatedly (well until now). I’m asking folks to back off a bit and give him a break.

I’m sucking on a Diet Coke, myself. I should probably get back to work…

According to spy novels, you can completely shut down your phone, GPS and all, by pulling the battery out. If true, you can escape any big notify in that way. As for me, I don’t fear the orange one quite that much. It’s your call.

According to spy movies you have to run over it with a truck. Or just snap off the screen if it’s a flip phone, the same way that shooting a computer monitor erases its hard drive.

Thanks for clearing that up, I had no idea what this was about, and no, my phone will not be turned off.

Terrible OP

As I understand it, the Linux community have a saying that “feature” is a synonym for “bug”.

I have no problem recieving Amber alerts, tornado warnings and such on my phone. This, however is being touted as a “Presidential” alert. What a crock of insecure musroom penis bullshit.

Because irony is a powerful force in this administration…

I don’t want the president texting me during an emergency; he’s got other important things to do. Delegate, fer chrissake; I’m sure he’s got lots of competent people around who… oh.

Here, here! I waited and someone did it! Thx.

Gato, dude your avatar. You kill me.

Is it 2:18 in each time zone?

No.

From FEMA’s page about the alert system.

That act is the one that added the Presidential alerts to the system. By law, there needs to be the first test of that part of the system during Trump’s administration.

Testing a new addition to emergency notification before there is an actual emergency seems like a pretty good idea. It’s not even just a good idea. It’s the law. I have a hard time being upset about the Trump administration following both the intent and the letter of the law.

This is probably a lame question, I am sure. But, how do they send it to everyone’s phone. A huge group text? Is some one typing in everyone’s number in a system? How did they get all those numbers? Are the big cel companies gonna be overwhelmed. I worry.

So, this really has nothing to do with Trump. The laws that require this test to be performed were legislated and enacted before Trump was elected. The exact same test would be performed if Hillary had been elected. Yes, our government decided that the President needed a way to broadly contact as many Americans as possible before many (if anyone) believed Trump really had a chance to become President. The fact that Trump is President has nothing to do with the test. In fact, according to the quoted text, isn’t even required to be a part of the test. The term “Presidental Alert” is only the name of the alert.

But, many Dopers believe that turning off their phone is a logical form of protest against the current President.

It *IS *taking longer than we thought.

I left out the link to the FEMA page about the test in my last post. It should help put a lot of your concerns to rest. The newest addition is built on top of the same system as the Amber Alerts. They don’t need or type in everyone’s numbers. They send the message to every phone (with the necessary hardware) connected to the cell towers sending it. The towers already know and track which phones those are. The system is built on the same infrastucture as some international warning systems. That means even some visitors to the US will receive the alert if they are connected to US cell towers.

So most of the posters so far in this thread are getting worked up about the current POTUS actually attempting to follow the law? That is a first.

I understand the OP might be viewed as a little enigmatic, but most folks here seem to have been up to speed from the get-go. For the few who were topically challenged on the subject, I would think by reply #3 you would at least have a clue: and by #8, all doubts removed. A mere 30 minutes elapsed between the time I OP’d and #8. During this time span (and certainly later!) for those who were confused there was ample opportunity to:

  1. Do a little Googling for some insight into the OP if curiosity has been piqued. Many people do this. 2) For the non curious, arrive at the decision that the OP is beyond interest or comprehension and quietly move on without comment. Some people do this. 3) Politely ask the OP for clarification. Most people do this. In retrospect, I now think that Happy Lendervedder’s original reply #4 was an attempt in this category, but due to it’s brevity, I fear I misinterpreted it as a “No”.
This being IMHO vs GQ, I was under the impression the standards for technical clarity and decorum were greatly relaxed, so it is interesting that some have expressed so much angst about this topic concerning the aforementioned criteria.
Colibri: It’s very interesting that someone from Panama? could be so attuned to the political nuance, current events, and other news in the USA,** (permitting you to feel comfortable in regularly chastising SD participants for violating (often) subtle indiscretions related to such)** now play the “I’m not from the USA, so how could I know?” card. Pick your poison.
Sometimes, a dick is just a dick… regardless where they are from.

Stop right there.

It is now, and has always been, the responsibility of the original poster to provide a clear and concise premise of what they wish to discuss. This OP failed magnificently.

4chan would have been a better forum for the OP.
