10 Best and Worst Speaking Voices

Seriously???

I’d replace him on your otherwise excellent list with Ronald Colman.

Hell yes! I guess it depends “teeth in” or “teeth out,” but that man makes me want to be a curmudgeon!

Pace “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” swapping in Charles Grodin for Brennan

Some best female: Ava Gardner, Bacall, Jean Arthur. Agree on that awful Sarah Vowell. She sounds like she gargles on razor blades, and if she doesn’t I wish she would or shut up of her own accord.

Keith Morrison from “Dateline NBC” should go up on the board for awesome male voice. I know, SNL got to him first thanks to Bill Hader, but I never miss a show (well, hardly ever) if I find out he’s going to be the guy.

Howard Cosell died a few months before I was born, so I didn’t know about him until recently. I watched a video of him commentating on the death of John Lennon. I thought, “This guy is a sports commentator? Why would someone let him be a public speaker, given how just plain silly his voice is?” I instantly held his voice dear to me.

Anyone else want to share anything?

Male voices I could listen to all day:

Patrick Stewart
James Earl Jones
Dylan Walsh

I haven’t seen young actress Camilla Belle mentioned yet – her voice is the best thing about every movie she is in.

I think Kate Sagal has one of the very best female voices ever. I also like Mila Kunis’s voice.

Right now I’m listening to some sort of strange hybrid of audiobook and soundtrack to a movie…it’s “The Night of the Hunter” as narrated by Walter Schumann. His voice is divine.

Robert Mitchum had a great speaking voice, too, and his singing voice is remarkably lovely. I remember the first time I saw this movie, having seen him play a number of coarse tough-guy roles previously…to hear that lovely baritone come out of his mouth was quite a surprise.

Leaning…leaning…

Hello?!?!?! Anyone else?

Do it! We have it, and even the kids were riveted when we played it on a driving trip.
Casting my vote for James Earl Jones, sounds like I’m in a big club there.

Barbara Rosenblat (audiobook narrator) is a favorite of mine. I’ve gotten audiobooks from the library just because she’s listed as the narrator. Tremendously versatile voice, she does a wide mix of accents / voices so well that I can actually tell which character is speaking.

Come back to life, board!!! :frowning:
I wish there was a crying emoticon. That would portray my emotions far more accurately. :smack:

Let it go, man. Threads die. It’s the Circle of Life.

I agree with many of the common selections (James Earl Jones, Alan Rickman, Vincent Price, etc) but I really liked George Carlin’s voice, especially his narration of Thomas The Tank Engine episodes.

I used to get a vicarious thrill watching those videos with my oldest son knowing he was the same guy that uttered the “Seven words you can’t say on television”.

James Earl Jones
Richard Burton

bad
Jerry Lewis
Gotfried

The woman with the worst voice is Wisconsin State Senator Kathleen Vinehout.

Jennifer Tilly has the best voice.

Surprised no one has mentioned Paul Harvey, who had what some have called “the perfect radio voice”. I heard him a few times in person, and surprisingly he was an uninspiring public speaker. He was so used to talking at a microphone that his public speech was mostly devoid of any body motion or facial expression. Great speaking voice, though.

On the negative side, I’ll second Sarah Palin for “most grating voice”. I never cared much for listening to Hillary Clinton either, although it’s not so much her vocal qualities as her tendency to sound shrill and b*tchy when she gets defensive…which is often.
SS

ETA Ronald Reagan had a good voice too…it had that slightly husky intimate quality that helped to make him so convincing.

Gratingly bad: Elizabeth Dole.

Best Male:
George Sanders
Orson Welles
Phil Hartman
Bing Crosby
Kelsey Grammer
Gale Gordon
William Conrad
Mel Allen
Stephen Fry
Walter Cronkite

Worst Male:

Mark Levine
Barney Frank
Lou Costello
Andy Devine
Charlie Rangel
Sylvester Stallone
Harvey Fierstein
Gilbert Gottfried (although I understand the famous loud voice associated with him isn’t his real voice)
Jay Leno
Dick Vitale

Women’s voices are harder to judge for me, so here are some that I hate:

Sarah Palin (I even agree more than disagree with her politics- and still can’t stand to listen to her)
Hillary Clinton
Fantasia Barrino (or however you spell it- sounds like a three year old crackhead)
Sheri Shepherd
Laura Ingraham
Paula Deen

REALLY?!?
He actually has a pretty decent voice; the fact that he seems to be chronically forced to speak slightly out one side of his mouth doesn’t distract me too much from the fact that he’s got a nice deep, resonant voice.
