10 Musicians You Don't Like From The 60s?

Davy Jones was said to be a douchebag.

Wow, Baker is a real peach. How in the world is he married?

The power of money and fame cannot be over-emphasize.

I understand Bob Dylan has always been who he is, but that’s part of his person. If I ever met him, I’m not sure I would like him.

Melanie. She was on my old man’s eclectic playlist and part of the soundtrack of my childhood (along with Leon Redbone and Leadbelly and Townes Van Zandt and Herb Alpert & his Marijuana Grass). I may as well have spent the 60s-70s on a different planet because I never meet anyone even familiar with the names, my age or even older. So with that, a Melanie cover, just for you! You’re welcome.

I remember reading on the JREF website that Tommy is a huge believer in paranormal woo crap, and that he is friends with Uri Geller.

As for Jim Morrison, I always imagined that, had he lived, his personal and career arc would be very similar to Axl Rose’s.

Dickie Smothers used to race Formula One cars. I find that a lot weirder that the paranormal woo crap.

Deep Purple weren’t successful until the early 70s but they were formed in’68 so I must mention Richie Blackmore. What a twat. I saw a “where are they now” type of show that I think was done recently.

He seemed the most miserable, self aggrandizing prick, with nothing good to say about anyone. He’s still got that ridiculous shag hairdo that he now slathers with shoe black and does some kind of . . musical theatre(?) with his much younger wife. Not that couples with large age differences is grounds for disdain or anything, but he just seems so old and cranky and unaware how he comes off and she “seems” (can’t really tell by the short time she was featured) like a (beautiful) flake.

Good choice - the LP will break up into shards on the way in.

Seriously, that’s why I stopped listening to classic rock stations. Who’s Next is a fucking awesome record, but I found myself pushing the button to change the station whenever a song from that album came on. And that was just one example of many.

The shortened version of Won’t Get Fooled makes me want to die. The Who had a few songs of real consequence that also never age. It hurts my soul to hear one chopped up because commercialism.

Tru dat. But I’m gonna do the music part anyway, because frankly I’ve never learned much about musicians’ personalities - it just isn’t important to me.

Also, before I opened the thread, I figured I’d come up with a list before I was influenced by others’. So I Googled the Billboard Top 100 songs of 1966-1969, and I’ve got a bunch of names that have mostly been overlooked here:

Tom Jones
Bobby Goldsboro
Gary Puckett
Bee Gees
Barry Sadler
Engelbert Humperdinck
Frankie Valli
Lou Christie
Oliver
Bobby Vee

FWIW, I agree with the prevailing sentiments about David Crosby: I figured out back in 1971 that if a CSN or CSN&Y song really dragged, it was almost surely written by Crosby: “Almost Cut My Hair,” “Triad,” “Long Time Gone” - zzzzz. But the guys on my list make Crosby look good.

I never heard this, and it sounds interesting. Can somebody direct me to where I can read about it?

I don’t know for sure, but it may be about the tension between McCartney and Harrison in the studio. From All The Songs: The Story Behind Every Beatles Release:

and (describing the recording of the song “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”):

And here’s Paul, looking back on those years (quoted in Conversations with McCartney):

For a vain, egotistical, arrogant piece of shit like Paul McCartney to be only the SECOND biggest asshole in The Beatles really says what a truly nasty thing John Lennon was.

(and for the record, I think McCartney and Lennon, together and in their solo careers, both wrote some of the most iconic, important songs of the 20th Century. Two legendary creative artists, two small, ugly, vile little men)

Thudlow @92:. Paul grabbed George’s guitar and proceeded to play an excellent solo?

Did Paul suddenly become right-handed, or did he play the guitar upside-down? Sounds like something Mozart would do on the fortepiano to impress the other boozers.

Mozart was supposed to be somewhat of a dick, also.

I thought it was going to be Miley…and I would have been fine with it.

My ten and why:
Bobby Beausoleil - Manson Family member and convicted murderer
Ray Collins - Convicted pedophile/child rapist
Gary Glitter - Convicted pedophile
Lou Reed - Asshole who spent way too much time and energy dissing other artists
Glen Frye - General asshole. Held his grudge against Don Felder far too long over far too little
John Lennon - Insufferably egotistical asshole, child neglecter (the first one anyway), and occasional wife beater
Paul Simon - Egotistical douche bag
John Fogarty - Asshole totally dismissive of the contributions and importance of his band mates
Mark Farner - You have to see the VH1 Behind the Music episode on GFRR to appreciate what a dumb douche this guy is
Joan Jett - Made a career out of an act she swiped from Suzy Quatro.

Oops, my apology to Ray Collins. I meant Roy Estrada. Wrong mother.

I have no idea if this is true, and I have no problem believing it.

I was horrified to read the story behind the making of Trout Mask Replica and to learn how evilly Captain Beefheart abused the members of his Magic Band: keeping them confined, not paying them, starving them, and subjecting them to emotional and physical abuse until they broke down in tears and were subjugated to his paranoid schizophrenia. It sounds like an absolute destructive-cult nightmare.

I haven’t seen the movie, but Baker has Bruce beat because he was a a-hole before and after Cream!

Hate the man, love his music!
