100 Greatest Movie Deaths -- add your favorite! (SPOILERS)

Shinzon in Star Trek: Nemisis; pulling himself closer to Picard as he dies.

“I’m glad we’re together now”

Can’t really go on saying that and not give credit to Data sacrificing himself to save Picard. It was the closest thing he could do to become more human: killing himself to save a real man.

And I must give another shout out for Tom Hulce as Mozart in Amadeus. Dying writing a Requiem for the dead… that’s the way to go AND it’s a reflection of a true story. (I’m listening to the Lacrimosa right now).

I’d have to put Gus Macrae’s death (Robert Duval) in Lonesome Dove right up there. One of the best westerns (and mini-series) ever made. It was poingant yet he was still an arse-kicker when he went.

I know it isn’t a cinematic movie per say but well worth a mention. It also has one of the best ending lines in any movie I have ever seen.

Can’t believe we got Boromir twice, but nobody mentioned Gandalf.

Okay, I just read through the whole thread, I have a GREAT one and no one mentioned it, YAY!!

The Last of the Mohicans WHen Uncas dies and when Alice jumps after him, WOW

10: Alice and Uncas in Last of the Mohicans (suicidal leap from cliff and killed in battle, respectively)

We’re in the top ten! And once again I had to omit the entries that did not include a character or actor name.

I came back to mention Jack Vincennes in LA Confidential (“Have you a validiction, boyo?”) but I see Zeldar beat me to it, so I guess I have to mention that other fabulous Spacey shooting death, when Lester Burnham took one to the back of the skull in American Beauty.

Another shooting death, one that I cannot believe has gone unmentioned thus far, is Alex Forrest (Glenn Close) in her white dress in Fatal Attraction.

And with another Glenn Close connection, the shooting death of the socialite rapist/murderer Jack Forrester (Jeff Bridges) in Jagged Edge. He had his face covered, so his identity was hidden until after he was dead, and it was a nailbiter to the very moment that the mask was finally pulled back.

Last, the death of Ellen’s father, The Marshall (Gary Sinise) in The Quick and the Dead. Shot to death by his own little girl as she tried to save him from hanging at the hands of the evil John Herod (Gene Hackman). Cold and brutal.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunnaway in Bonnie and Clyde

Network news anchorman on the “UBS Network News Show,” known to millions as the Mad Prophet of the Airwaves, was shot to death tonight in a fusillade of automatic rifle fire just as he began this evening’s brodcast…

The extraordinary incident occurred in full view of his millions of viewers. The assassins were members of a terrorist group called the Ecumenical Liberation Army…

This was the story of Howard Beale. The first know instance of a man who was killed because he had lousy ratings.

What about the death of HAL in 2001? I don’t suppose it could be considered death, but still!.

2: Thelma and Louise in Thelma and Louise (suicidal drive over a cliff)

Only one spot left! What’s the greatest of all deaths in cinematic history?

Darth Vadar dying in Luke’s arms.

Gandalf’s a tricky one… his ‘death scene’ & its emotional impact on the viewer is pretty dependent on if you’re read the trilogy (ie know what happens to him) or not.

2: Darth Vader in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (dies in his son’s arms)

Realized I had a duplicate entry for American History X, so went back and revised. So #1 is still available. Gandalf doesn’t count because he never really died (ghosts and such count, so Darth and Obi-Wan’s appearances are all right, but if it only looks like the character dies than it doesn’t count).

Satine in Moulin Rouge

Next time you update you can specify that it’s a hanging…

16: Messala in Ben-Hur

Another item, if you want to update it, is that Messala was run over and stomped in the big chariot race.

what about the old dude who gets cubed by the razorwire right at the start of cube?
that one stayed with me a while.
or is this thread done with now?

Arthur Penn’s “Bonnie & Clyde.” That was some scene.

AN OCCURANCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE
1962
Director / Screenwriter: Robert Enrico
Short Film Based on a story by Ambrose Pierce

Starring: Roger Jacquet who plays a captured civil war soldier about to be hanged for espionage. The lead characters life and good fortune are literally murdered on screen the moment the audience realizes the broken noose that led to his escape was all just a life before death fantasy.

I think it won some kind of acedemy award and was also aired on TV as either a Twilight Zone or Alfred Hitchcock presents epsiode.

I want to second Joe Pesci’s death by baseball bat in Casino, especially since it appears to have been overlooked. Simply brutal.
