100 mile on my handcycle.

and an update on this.

I have been walking with just a cane and AFO since Jan 12 2006. I have been an assistant track coach at a local high school for the last two seasons and will be gong to the local community college to try to gain some job skills that I am lacking. Hopefully by the end of the year I will be looking to return to the working world. I still go to the gym and started taking a step aerobics class. I’m kind of slow and a lot of the moves I can’t do or need to modify but I have seen a small improvement in overall mobility and balance.

On to the main story.

After riding four metric centuries(100K) I decided it was time to tackle a full century. I chose the Delta Century on May 6. The course is flat, about
35ft below sea level to to 25 above mostly on levee roads. The start was at Jessie"s Grove Winery in Lodi ,went through Acampo,Thornton with a lunch stop in Clarksburg before returning through Walnut Grove back to the winery. The weather was about 60 with light NW winds but the wind quickly picked up to about 15 and the climbed to 20 by mid day and was probably about 25 by mid afternoon. Had to fight that headwind for the first 50 miles and the return trip was mostly crosswind or sheltered from the tailwind. Made for a REALLY tough day.I missed the turn for the lunch stop and had to backtrack, adding a few miles. At 70 miles we crossed the river on this ferry . I did enjoy the ride and the challenge and had lots of questions from other riders about my bike. Did have a spot of trouble driving home as I had trouble gripping the steering wheel and had to use my palm and side of hand to steer.
