cole was successful in helping the scientists with a positive ID on the virus carrying suspect. And one of the scientists are seen on the plane at the end of the movie with the virus spreader.
she states herself to be in the business of" insurance" which means shes insuring the future civilization of humans.
she will now know what the virus is and the scientists will work on a cure for it in the present time. therefore the human race will come out from underground and once again claim the earth

Time travel to the past as far as anyone knows is impossible. Time travel to the future is totally possible but it’s a one way trip. But lets assume for one minute traveling to the past is possible, the moment you land you likely create a new time line. You likely can’t change the future you came from at all. All you have done is create a new dimension if you will. So many problems about traveling to the past can occur that genius such as Einstein deemed traveling to the past an impossibility but if you could it would not change the time you came from just create a new one. As for the movie I found the ending completely unsatisfying. I don’t like any movie or show that leaves the ending open ended and open to interpretation. I like a definite and defined ending. I prefer happier endings but even sad or dark endings are better than open ended up for grab endings. There is a TV show on Syfy based on the movie called 12 monkeys as well and I certainly hope the writers write a better ending for the tv show than they did for the movie.
