1500 Clay, Davenport, IA

Ok, I apologize for perpetuating an e-mail forward on the SDMB, but it leads to a question.

Now I know Cecil covered easter eggs on maps before, but this seems to go a little beyond that. I did a little bit of reseearch and one of those streets (Buttlickin’) shows up on other online maps as well! (Anybody got a Davenport Key Map?) Even National Geographic has it, and their data seems to be from a substantially different source. (Esp. since the other street gets an actual name.)

It appears that these streets go into or adjoin Marycrest International University, which was closed forever in August. I was thinking maybe that college had a rep, or something, that would lead a bored cartographer to slip something like this in.

So how does this thing get perpetuated across several map sites? And can anybody speculate with some intelligence on how or why this happened?

My guess would be young male cartographer now employed elsewhere or about to be…

Heh. You’re right. “Buttlickin Avenue” and “Fagdaddy Street”.

Er, because mapmakers just copy off each other?

Cecil, Do maps have “copyright traps” to permit detection of unauthorized copies?

Ah ha! Light dawns. GoogleNews, “marycrest international university davenport”. Your answer is here, too long to quote the entire thing, but full of much good information.

Answer: someone’s just jacking around with Yahoo and AOL. No “bored cartographers”, just a bored cracker.

Ah. I googled last night and nothing came up. Thanks.

GoogleNews rocks. Makes me wish I had a business so I could buy some advertising and support them.
