16 v. 24-bit CD's: Much Difference in Quality?

As a recovering audiophile I can tell you that the best sound you will ever hear is a live performance.

I have heard some spectacular recordings on a fully mechanical wind-up Edison phonograph my father has. Sounds like listening to the real thing through a drain-pipe at the club, but it still isn’t the real thing.

I have listened to $100,000 systems that have fine sound. Both analog and digital. Depends on the skill used to record the source. But if you are going to be doing anything else at the same time, it doesn’t matter at all, you won’t be able to tell the difference. No one on this board sits, listens and does nothing else, you all cruise the web at the same time. So it doesn’t matter.

Yes, good vinyl sounds better than most CDs. But I have CDs that sound as good a good vinyl. The skill of the engineer matters.

People with better ears than mine (professional reviewers) cannot tell the difference between 20 bit and 24 bit. They can tell the difference from 16 bit. How much is expensive? Taking a VHS to DVD supposedly costs about $30k. I assume an audio is in the same ballpark.

Enjoy the music.
