Many times in different threads I have seen “1920s style death rays” referenced knowingly,
so, what’s the dope?
Where did this thing start? What does it mean? What was the original post that got the whole thing started?
Inquiring minds want to know.
I’ve tried searching for it. But it seems like there are several thousand posts with just those words.
Dogface only wanted to redescribe the ‘scalar weapons’ in more familiar terms. Then he tripleposted, which looked funny. Next, in true SDMB fashion other posters started to emulate his post, or use variations, just for fun.
Whence the popularity? Because it is a short phrase, easily remembered, that lends itself to zillions of variations. It’s catchy and it’s fun. You should try it some time. They’re 1920’s style “Death Rays”.
If you don’t like the joke, my apologies. But you should know by now that this would happen. FTR, there are lots of members who don’t like it at all (ask Seven).
Then again some members are very interested in the phrase. Why? Because it is more than just a phrase … it is a fact. Myles, rather than my rehashing all the 1,000 previous postings, you should go to the original thread and see for yourself.
I imagine if people (such as myself) keep posting to such topics I might get a stern warning from a moderator stating it is against Message Board rules, etc. But I know better. The Straight Dope Message Board moderators are answering to a higher authority and trying to suppress the truth about these weapons.
I’ve uncovered some facts which links these weapons to Area 51, the Illuminati, the Trilateral Commission, NSA, CIA and maybe even the Bureau of Weights and Measures !!! (That’s when you know you are getting really close to the truth).
You won’t get ME to use that phrase here… I mean, I was lurking here when it started, and it was pretty amusing; ah well, maybe I can get in on the next inside joke.
