Looking around the internet at US Mint sets, I was surprised to find there actually is a 1975 Mint Set which includes a quarter. However, there were no 1975 quarters made. I understand the Mint skipped the 1975 quarter to meet the anticipated demand for the upcoming bicentennial quarter. And, I understand production of the 1976 quarter started in 1975. So, what quarter would be in the 1975 Mint set?
Hopefully a Doper into coin collecting can answer if the 1976 quarter appears in the 1975 Mint sets? Or, if not, what then?
From the US Mint website, the Mint made 1974 dollars, 50 cent pieces and quarters the first half of 1975 then changed over the the 1776-1976 Bicentennial coins. The only 1975 minted coins were the penny, nickel and dime. They never made stamps for the 3 larger denomination coins for 1975 so if any do show up, they are fakes.
Thanks! I did confirm from the authority on US coin values (ie, the Red Book) that, indeed, the quarters and higher coins in these Mint sets are from 1976. Tip: While the Mint has an email, they had no clue! They’re probably all too young to know! They referred me to the National Archives.
There are two distinct versions of the 1776-1976 bicentennial Eisenhower dollars, one with wider reverse lettering from the other. Apparently all of the dollars in the mint sets are the second type, which is more common. It would have otherwise been a great way to tell which year the coins were made.
