Wow, you guys certainly like old movies. Apart from Bergman, I don’t like much of anything made before 1970… :smack:

Going Places

most of those movies seem good, not great. do you actually think the whole list, or most o fit, is on great movie status?

You forgot Grease 2, which along with Tron, I’m pretty sure I remember watching on early cable tv in 1983. (And robin Williams as Popeye.) Could these be the earliest examples of movies going suddenly to cable?

is grease 2 really that highly regarded as a movie? i left off dark crystal too and a couple others… good but not great movies…

Neither is Tron.

I liked it, you may not like it, but it has a big place in movie history, does it not?

Yes. I saw it start from a preliminary treatment and make it to the film. I still didn’t like it. It’s ok if you did. It’s place in history is a bit overplayed. It wasn’t the first movie to use computer animation, and the majority of the special effects were hand painted ‘glows’. BTW: I’m the real Kevin Flynn. That’s why people are always saying Jeff Bridges looks like me.

any other movie you think should not be on the list???

Impressive list for 1982. For my money, the 82 list beats the 39, 62 and 74 lists, in some cases handily.

yes but maybe that is kind of a split between people who like “old” movies and people who don’t.

You also left a few good ones off the 82 list:

Poltergeist
Pink Floyd: The Wall
Tootsie

And not really fitting the theme of thread (Tootsie is pushing it):

Gandhi
Sophie’s Choice

that was my personal selection
probably Sophie’s Choice and Gandhi need to be on there
but I’m not terribly excited by either of them

Not really. I like your list and all the others. There’s a few movies on them that wouldn’t be in my selection, but it’s all a matter of taste. I guess I’d leave Rocky III off because it was inferior to the original, but it was still a major movie event that turned Hulk Hogan and Mr. T into stars. First Blood wouldn’t be too high on my list, but even that was a prototype for future action/effects movies. It would just be similar nitpicking on the other years, none of them are rotten movies that I noticed.

yeah but the training season and running on the beach from Rocky III !!!
and seriously, just the scenery alone in First Blood makes for one great movie…

1984 wasn’t too shabby. Nor was 1994.
