With these decades for movies? Could be one word, a sentence, etc…
1930s - populism
1940s - heroism
1950s - rebellion
1960s - independence
1970s - gritty, natural, and a combination of previous decades

I’ll try, though those are not the decades I am most familiar with:
1930’s - Rise of the proper feature film
1940’s - Feature films become an improved art-form
1950’s - Bland
1960’s - Color movies normalize their lighting and color film and look similar to today
1970’s - Rise of the summer blockbusters
Out of curiosity, were you talking about world cinema or American films? I should have clarified, but I was thinking of American movies, but it’s hard to come up with world cinema, although I’ve seen a lot of it, but not as much as American movies.
The 1940’s had a neo-realism movement from Italy, with the masters like Vittorio De Sica and Roberto Rosselini, Luchino Visconti. Many countries seemed to have their own New Wave in the 1960s.
American cinema only:
1930s – Pre-Code promise/Code-mandated emasculation (in effect into the '60s)
1940s – WWII propaganda/Postwar malaise
1950s – Conformity with hints of unease
1960s – Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll
1970s – Personal freedom/Blockbuster Era
Damn good answers!
I might try to think of a movie that represented the characteristic from each decade… “The Grapes of Wrath” JUST missed the 30s, and I’m finishing up some NBA Playoffs from last night, and will try and come back in a bit.
1930s - populism - “Mr. Deeds Goes To Town”
1940s - heroism - “Twelve O’Clock High”
1950s - rebellion - “A Face In The Crowd”
1960s - independence - “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?”
1970s - gritty, natural, and a combination of previous decades - “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”
