1st time for eye glasses

I’ve never had glasses, but I got my first pair today. WEIRD!

For the past year or two my eyes have been bugging me. I see fine for the most part, but I have noticed that it is hard to focus on very close objects such as wiring labels at work, when in the past it was no problem. At the end of the day my eyes just feel like they have dust in them and I need to rub them. I figured my eyes are just tired or strained and need a little help.

I have no idea what to expect from glasses so I don’t know if I’m just overreacting. As I type this I can see the letters perfectly without my glasses. If I put my glasses on the letters seem a little out of focus, but seem to adjust if I keep wearing them.

Is my script wrong or are my eyes calibrating?

I assume you got reading glasses. I can’t speak to those, but glasses for nearsightedness (that is ‘regular glasses’) always take a few days to get used to. Most people, IME, think they have the wrong script for that first day or two.

If they’re regular glasses, that’s probably the case. If they’re reading glasses, I’d suggest using them as often as you can and see how you feel after a few days.

I have an astigmatism (I can’t see near or far) and whenever I get a new prescription, unless it’s super close to the last one, I have problems seeing for a bit when I wear them. It is very awkward to walk, for me.

Surprised your doctor didn’t tell you this. But if it lasts more than a week, do call your doc and let them know.

I’m surprised she didn’t either. I ordered a pair of Oakley Panels and sent my Oakley Crosshairs to get the script. The panels came in today and the tech said they were for reading. My sunglasses aren’t in yet, but she said they are being setup for normal wear. Honestly, she probably told me that when I ordered them, but I was a little out of my element and didn’t know what to expect anyway. I guess I thought I could wear these anytime, but I can’t because anything more than a couple feet away is way out of focus. Although, I realize this now that I’m typing that distant objects are coming into focus as well. Damn this is weird!

Is it possible to get these changed for normal wear or am I going to get charged for a new set of lenses? If I knew what to expect then I would have spent less for strictly reading glasses.

I have a history of accidents (small ones!) after eyeglasses prescription changes. The world looks just different enough, my depth-perception and estimates of distances are a tad off.

The most painful one was when I tried leaping from one rock to another rock…and found out that my glasses make objects appear to be closer than they really are. Missed the other rock and banged my knees. Bleeping ouch!

Good thing you aren’t into Parkour training! Sorry man, but you have to see the humor in this. Glad you’re OK though.

Grin! Exactly so! One laughs because crying is futile and vomiting is inelegant.

Another time, I had just gotten a new eyeglasses prescription…and scraped my car against another car. The other car was parked. The other car was a tow truck. I scraped against the lifting forks in the back. Nice parallel scrapes along one of my doors. Damage to the truck? Absolutely zero! I went around to the driver of the truck and said, “Any damage to your truck?” He laughed and said no. I said, “Then let’s just pretend this never happened.”

Now, I take exceptional care when starting to wear a new set of eyeglasses!

How old are you, Gotlift?

what a nice opportuniity to quote an old thread called I’m about to be an eyeglass wearer

I call them “Hobbit glasses”. I have progressives; whenever I’m walking, they make the ground seem closer and make me feel like I’m 5’ tall. Never had that problem until after I had cataract surgery and got the new script. Weird.
