You’d be a rarity at the moment.
I second the whole Ironman-endeavor.
I also feel like I have an ungodly endurance factor; I can be without training for six months and then go run 15 miles and feel fine afterwards, aside from muscle/joint aches, which have nothing to do with endurance. But I attribute my larger-than-normal lungs for that feat.
I’m a slow runner, known that my whole life, but I seem to be built for endurance. I found that as the distances I raced at increased, my precent finish relative to the rest of the field improved. For example, in a 5k I’ll finish about 2/3’s back in the field. In a marathon, I’ll finish about 20% back. So I may not be fast, but my pace doesn’t fall off with distance as much as most runners.
I’d have to be competent before I could be competitive at these, but:
Archery and swimming.
Nothing like the things you guys are talking about, but I’d love to be a good competitive barroom pool player. I could get a lot better if I practiced more (although I don’t have any depth perception and have to close one eye to shoot straight at all). I just haven’t.
I’d also like to learn to be a good ballroom dancer.
Ballroom dancing would be awesome!
My husband and I already posess more than above average dancing skills ( yay for German folk dancing!) and we are not afraid to make a total cake of ourselves in front of people That’s what wearing a drindl does to you…makes you near bulletproof to ridicule!. I’d have to have a different dance partner.
My husband won’t let me lead and has the strength to keep me in line as I try to freeball it, as it were. It’s like dancing with a brick shit house, really.
I’d have to say that I’m currently working on improving my bowling. Changed my approach, new ball & grip and my pin average is up from 109 to 123. My uberbowler friend wants me to try a different style (i forget what she calls it) but she thinks I will see great improvement in my total pins per game average.
I am a very competant swimming and even though I am a Total FatAss ™ right now, can still swm like a fish. Swimming the English Channel [size=1] except the entire salt water issues…yuck.[/sizeor even Lake Huron to Canada has always been a dream of mine.
I would really love to be able to do hiking/biking/camping combo. Y’know. Bike across the country with all my gear with me kinda thing. (That whole getting down to the nitty gritty and back to nature thing appeals to me.)
Running, at all. I have a bizarre left foot - it turns in slightly. I limp (just a tiny bit) when I walk, and walking for an extended period of time hurts my ankle, knee, and hip. Running is worse. I’d really like to be one of those people who jogs around, but alas, this isn’t going to happen.
Swimming. I can swim okay now, and I can swim for a long time without getting tired… I just can’t swim fast. I am ungraceful and look awkward. I’d like to be able to do that little flippy thing experienced swimmers do when starting a new lap.
I don’t care about being competitive… being competent enough to be able to get a good workout from either of these is all I’d need. As it is, I’m quite out of shape.
Kudos to all you marathon wannabes. Hang in there, guy, if you train, it will happen. I just did my first marathon last year at the ripe age of 44. Now I’m dreaming about qualifying for Boston…
I’d also like to be a competent swimmer.
Tetherball - Out of around 200 who were interested in it during middle (and early high) school, I was in the top 5. And this was a school where people played for hours on end. In fact, when I played against an adult, even as a middle schooler, they ended up looking the fool (which is easy in tetherball) and I the pro. However, I haven’t played a good match as an adult, and I’m not sure there are otherwise-athletic people who are even interested in it.
I’d also want to do an Ironman someday: I’ve swum a mile or so, and done a marathon, and come close to completing 100m bike rides (failing due to equipment/light rather than tiredness),so I’d like to think I could do all 3.
Being a good boxer would be cool. I used to train at a boxing gym in my mid 20’s. I at least learned some footwork, and my basic punches and slips and blocks. But, I never got into serious fighting because the gym really focussed on guys who were trying to be real fighters.
I race my bicycle, and this last year I’ve taken up speed skating. I’m planning on being in a meet in February. Based on my speed compared to the guys I train with, I should be somewhat competitive in my class.
Both of those, I’m currently striving to be more competitive in.
I’d love to be a GP Level motorcycle racer, and a top condtender at the Irish / Isle of Man road racing events. Alas, club-level racing makes me happy enough.
Golf and downhill skiing. I just would like to be good enough to beat Mr. Wanna, anyway.
I would love to play professional baseball, even if for just one game, even if it’s the lowest of the low-A ball.
I wish I could still play basketball, too.
I would love to train to ride horses. It’s always been my dream to be more than just competent. I can sit a horse and not fall off, and can hold reins English or Western, but that’s about it (I can’t even post).
I would like to be a better swimmer. My form is pretty good, but I’m horribly out of shape and practice.
Is yoga an athletic endeavor? I would love to have the long, lean muscles and core body strength from that.
I would like to try my hand at the triathalon and maybe one day be able to compete in an Ironman competition. I’m a decent runner (I have plans to run a marathon at least at some point) and am ok at cycling, but I’m not particularly proficient at swimming. I’m still thinking about at least attempting a triathalon at some point in the near future.
I would also like to get back into downhill skiing. I used to ski quite a bit when I was younger, but since I went off to college haven’t really had the chance to ski any more.
One sport that I am getting fairly proficient in is ultimate (frisbee) and if I work hard these coming months and year, I have a pretty good shot at getting to play at the world championships in Australia. That would be cool.
The marathon. I’ve watched every Olympic marathon since 1984.
Since the Tour de France doesn’t count, I’ll settle for the Olympic cycling road race.
The mile. My personal best was 5:15, and that was years ago, although I can still get under 7:00 (and that carrying a bit too much weight, like a good bit too much). I don’t think I’ll ever beat that time again, but I think I can get it sub-6 again. It would be a rush to do just one sub-4, though.
Soccer. I’d love to be good enough to play in a competitive league again.
I would love to do a triatholon. the swimming isn’t a problem. I can do the biking ( complete with a cute little basket on the front of my bike!), but running…gah…
the only way you could get me to run is if there were a pitbull chasing after me and I was covered in steak. and I’d rather be eaten by a pitbull than actually run anything farther than possibly 100 yards.
and I’d make the news. Cause if you don’t finish, you are just a Loser. But if you are attacked by rabid pitbulls, you get the sympathy vote and a blurb in the paper.
*Woman wearing steak attached to her is mauled by pitbulls during the Run Amok Triathalon.
Mauled Marathoner Suing City for failure to warn her about the hazards of running with steak strapped to her back. See page 2
Special Referendum to discuss the future of marathons in the city as well as more stringent guidelines. See page 12.
ACLU says of the new referedum of the Triatholon Guidelines banning runners from carrying meat: " It is a basic infringment of their civil rights. Its not like these people are doping or something. They are on a high protein diet. You people need to chill."
“Is it Kosher?” ask Rabbi Iceburg when asked his thoughts.*

I’ve always wished I was good at volleyball. It seems so California-cool to a Midwesterner. But it’s hopeless–I’m of only average height and have a vertical leap of about two inches.
More realistically, I recently took up the noble sport of curling, at which even at my age I can still hope to develop some proficiency.
