2 mnute mystery

Frank is nervously pacing up and down his hotel room. He is preparing for a meeting with some important clients who he is supposed to meet in the hotel lobby at 20:30.
He checks his clock radio sitting on a small cabinet next to his bed and sees that he has several hours to go before the meeting. He decides to have a quick nap. Since he only wants a quick nap he doesn’t bother getting undressed and just takes out his false teeth, kicks off his shoes and puts his glasses on the bedside table. He’s worn out from worrying so he falls asleep very quickly.
When he wakes up it’s dark. “Damn, must’ve overslept” he thought. Drowsily he turned to look at the bedside clock, struggling to focus through his tiredness. The clock said 20:15. The meeting was at 20:30 so he had to hurry. He managed to get ready quickly and he ran downstairs to the lobby. This whole proceedure took 5 minutes. When he got to the lobby a waitress came up to him asked

“Are you Frank Smith?”
“Yes” he replied.

“Well, the two gentlemen who you had arranged to meet here asked me to tell you that they were tired of waiting and have left”

Frank was amazed. He knew his clients were always obsessively punctual, never a minute too early or a minute too late. What could have happened?

How did Frank manage to miss the two clients?

The clock really said 20:75. It looked like 20:15 because one of the bars had burned out.

Frank had flown in from a country in another timezone. The alarm clock was his own and was showing the time in his home country.

Well, that’s my guess.

Man!

The clock was upside-down and said “21:05” so he was 35 minutes late.

10 minutes, not bad

What actually happened was that Frank looked at the clock through a glass of water (where he would have put his false teeth) and the time was turned upsidedown.

Well done Scratch

That was an Old ellery Queen plot, redone on both Matlock and Colombo.

Really? I just got it from a book. Well, no wonder it was solved so quickly.

Not when I try it.

Well scratch’s answer is as close to mine as can be expected so I don’t suppose it matters much.

 I got it now, it’s swapped left to right in the glass!

I would have thought that he slept through the meeting time, all the way to the next day at 20:15.

Actually, since it was in the glass, and not upside down, it is a new puzzle. Let’s call Peter Faulk and set up a story session.!

It’s so quickly solved he didn’t even have time to include the I!

:o Homer that’s just corny.

New mystery please?
