2 questions about painting

  1. how do you paint crisp lines on the border of 2 paint colors? When I put down the blue 3M tape and painted, a little bit of paint seeped under the tape, leaving behind a “fuzzy” line. How do I make this crisp?

  2. how do you paint reallllly narrow spaces? i have a couple of visible spaces that are < 1" W x 12" H x 8" D.

thanks in advance for your advice?

For 1) I use masking tape. Not the blue stuff, I think thats for setting a barrier.

Well, the blue stuff IS masking tape, designed for painting. All I can tell you, Seth, is that I’m not a fan of the blue stuff–I like the regular beige stuff better, as IMO the adhesive on the beige stuff is better. With the blue stuff you need to have the edge stuck down really, really good.

As for your narrow space, um, how about a narrow paintbrush?

Like a, well, a “paintbrush.”

Heh, might as well use nail polish :). Good idea though.

The blue tape is masking tape for painting. Some advantages it has over the general tan tape, is its easy to remove, wont leave glue residue, and will “curve” better for taping off rounded areas. I agree, however, that it doesn’t leave the cleanest edge. For that, you need “clean edge” tape. This tape is designed for edging, and like the blue, is less sticky, removes easy and leaves no glue residue. I found my rolls of clean edge in a local hardware store, and it is called “clean edge” or “crisp edge” or something along those lines.

For narrow spaces, use a narrow brush, taped to the end of a broom stick if you need the reach. Foam brushes get as narrow as an inch, that I’ve seen. I’ve also cut down 2" foam brushed to the desired width.
