2002 Baseball Milestone Round-up

  • Seattle Mariners set American League record for wins in a season and tie Major League record with 116 wins.

  • Barry Bonds breaks three year old home run mark, belting 73 home runs to surpass the 70 mark set by mark McGwire. Is 6th on all time HR list. Breaks 60+ year-old career walks record set by Babe Ruth with 1779 walks

  • Ricky Henderson sets all-time runs scored record previously held by Ty Cobb. Becomes the 25th player to reach 3,000 hit milestone.

  • Roger Clemens is first ever pitcher to go 20-1. Moves up to third place on all-time strikeout list behind Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan.

  • Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken after playing their entire careers with the same club. Ripken and Gwynn are both members of the 3,000 hit club, Gwynn having won numerous batting titles in the National League and Cal Ripken setting new standard for consecutive games played.

  • Sammy Sosa becomes the first player to hit over 60 home runs in three different seasons.

  • Alex Rodriguez sets the mark for most home runs in a season by a shortstop with 52.

  • Mark McGwire moves to fifth place on the all-time home run list.

  • Atlanta Braves extend their own record by winning their tenth consecutive division title.

  • Ichiro Suzuki records most hits ever by a rookie, sets record for most singles in a season, and ties the record for most games reaching base safely.

  • Milwaukee Brewers achieve the dubious distinction of becoming the only team in MLB history to record more strikeouts than hits.

Any others?

Ugh!! 2001! 2001!! I dunno, can a mod hide my shame for me and correct the title?

Say what? Roger ended the season 20-3.

Yes, but at one point he was 20-1. He was the first pitcher to hit his 20th win with only one loss.

Haj

Albert Pujols set NL rookie records for most total bases and RBIs. I heard he was close to most extra base hits for a rookie, but I don’t know if he got that or not.
