2005 Caravan: Transmission cooler?

I’ve got a 2005 Dodge Caravan and we’re considering getting a small pop-up trailer for camping.

Towing capacity for this engine (the bigger six-cylinder) is 1800 lbs. Considering luggage & people and all that, we’re hoping to find a trailer that’s no more than 1400 lbs.

While I’m sure the engine is sufficient to tow this much, I’m worried about the transmission. Is there a way to protect it other than changing the fluid after a big trip?

Do you know if a transmission cooler is stock on this vehicle or if it can be beneficially added?

Thanks in advance,
-B

(according to the VIN, it wasn’t built with the towing package added)

I suggest contacting a reputable local (not a chain/franchise) transmission shop, preferably a member of ATRA, and ask their counsel. They could see if your vehicle already has a tranny cooler (stock or add-on), and if not could install one - properly. They also could advise if certain operating procedures apply (e.g., some trannies better withstand the stress of towing when in “Drive” than they do in “Overdrive”). This type of stuff is often specific to the particular transmission type used, so other folks’ experience may not be relevant.
