2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

Time added on to make up for stoppages during normal time, because the clock never stops in soccer matches. Also called injury time or, the official term, “additional time”. They’ll add on ~30 seconds for each substitution, more time for other significant stoppages (but not for routine things like the ball going out of play).

Stoppage time or injury time is added to the duration of a game to compensate for lost time due to injuries, substitutions, fireworks landing on the playing field, brawls, streaking and so on.

ShibbOleth, I couldn’t watch it, the game was that bad?

Ah, too slow…

I’m gonna ignore any work and watch the game.

Yellow card for Renaldo. Good - he’s a bloody diver.

Soccer (like hockey) is a sport that really benefits from HD. The wide-angle allows me to see more of the tactics going on.

C. Ronaldo thinks he’s a goddamn submarine.

Damn I wanted Cote d"Ivoire to win.

Unfortunately neither side really seemed to want to win. Matches like these are what put off much of the American viewing public.

The capper being Ivory Coast refusing to cross the final CK into the box when they knew that as soon as they kicked the ball match was essentially over thus not even a chance for a Portugal counter (it was beyond added time due to the treatment of one of their own players). Truly pathetic.

Then you must have liked Paraguay’s performance better than the Azzurris – they were the ones doing the better catenaccio and would have won if not for Villar’s howler.

Don’t you mean Il Divin Codino, Robbie Baggio?

Italy goalkeeper Buffon’s back problem ‘serious’

Côte d’Ivoire - Portugal
Very nice defense but inaccurate passing choked down the offense on both sides. I expected Portugal to play wider but they already narrowed their options in their own half because the full backs went into the midfield too soon where the space for easy passes was already covered by the vigilant Ivorian midfield.

Both sides held the ball too long and ran too much with it while the team mates didn’t seem to find the position to cross into any free spaces – and if they did, the pass was usually too weak to exploit the opportunity.

Portugal’s four “attackers” changed positions rapidly in the first half but it seemed to me that they rather blocked the spaces that way instead of opening them up for a team mate to go deep.

And C. Ronaldo was lucky, imo, the referee’s decisions were far too lax compared to other games. Now both teams either need to grab a point against Brazil or try to outscore the other one against North Korea.

So, what’s over/under on Brazil-North Korea?

If Brazil wins by less than 3 goals I’ll be stunned.

I don’t know about that. North Korea is traditionally a stone-wall. That is, they are a much more defensively minded team. No doubt Brazil is orders of magnitude better than North Korea, but in the group stage I don’t see them going all Chuck Norris on them. One or two goals up and they’ll start to play possession. Unless North Korea totally makes a fool of Kim Jong-il and lays down. If that happens, Brazil will score 10 without even trying.

Are these North Korean players from North Korea? I think their best player was born in Japan and is of South Korean background.

Are they just South Koreans or other guys who play for N. Korea for the money?

These North Koreans are acquitting themselves well so far.

Three of their players are Koreans from Japan.

ETA: It’s not just for the money. That guy tearing up during the DPRK’s anthem was one of the three.

Yet another disappointment from one the of favorites. Kudos to the N Koreans for their disciplined defending, but it’s not as if Brazil is doing much with the ball – way too static and predictable coming forward.

For any Spanish speakers out there, anyone laugh when you hear commentators talk about “Elano”? Add Kaka to the mix and I admit the group I’m watching with is having some fun what with all the puns they can come up with using those two. Juvenile sure, but certainly better than what’s on display so far.

Kaká is having a miserable match so far and the whole team was built around him, so that doesn’t help. We need something to break the N. Koreans defense. They close ranks and stand 5-3-2 and Brasil’s tactics just aren’t up to it. I hope Dunga does something to change the shape of the team during half-time, maybe taking out Gilberto Silva who barely touched the ball and putting someone who plays more forward. Also, we need more individual plays so we can try to get a foul near their goal.
