2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

Think again…
Fuck with the bull you’re going to get the horns.

Bunch of Chilean hackers should be down to 8 or 9 men by now!

Doesn’t matter. They’re going down!
Viva España! Y con un par!

Come on, [edit - directed at people who said the red card was harsh] the Chilean player Estrada was already lucky to have still been on the pitch. When he narrowly avoided a second yellow a few minutes before, I thought that Chile should substitute him immediately to avoid a red. He was on his absolute last chance already. Maybe it was accidental, maybe it was reckless. Still looked like a foul, and I was not at all surprised that he got sent off. Torres dives sometimes but he’s not really a faker. I think he was genuinely hurt.

Looked at the replay several times. It looks like Estrada did bump Torres’s leg, and Torres’s feet then got tangled up. I wouldn’t call it a dive, and Estrada certainly contacted him; whether it warranted a card is a matter of opinion, and I can accept that he was on a short tether with the ref already.

At any rate, Chile has to really hope that Honduras can hold the Swiss down for another 45+.

Exactly. If anything the Mexican ref has been lenient with the Chileans – I admit they had a good first 15 minutes, but after that it’s been all leg-hunting and flat out nasty play.

Meanwhile, Spain yet to get a yellow card in this tournament.

I agree with RedFury —I actually started out rooting for Chile, since I don’t like Spain, but now have reversed. Chile’s playing American football, not foot-football. The red card was questionable, but the ref wouldn’t have been so inclined to give it were Chile not fouling left and right!

Well, that changes the dynamic. Now even if the Swiss win 1-0, Chile is through on goals scored.

Spain, you mean.

If you’ll permit a tired, predictable American complaint: the diving, and the simulation (or exaggeration) of injuries, is the only thing that comes close to ruining soccer for me.

I watched much of North Korea’s game today. They’re not particularly good or interesting to watch, but one thing I must give them is that they just don’t dive. They would be actually knocked down by an opposing player, but they wouldn’t go to ground; instead, they’d arrest their fall (if possible) with their hands and then keep running (with no foul being called, of course). Compare this to the otherwise entertaining Spain-Chile match, which could plausibly have a sniper working the game. (Ok, it’s not actually so bad, but on that last yellow the Spanish player lay motionless on the ground, during an active attack on goal, after the lightest of touches.)

[/rant]

Chile pull one back. This is a weird game for me, because I want both teams to go through rather than Switzerland. Chile improving their goal difference makes it a bit harder for the Swiss, so that’s good. Don’t want Chile to win, though…

Huh? No, I meant exactly what I said.

If Chile loses 2-1 and Switzerland wins 1-0, Spain and Chile go through.

Bah. Your side is a bunch of nancies who go down at the slightest touch. Not the Chileans’ fault.

Oh, missed the most recent goal, watching the other game now. :smack:

Cesc x Torres.

Good move. More possession.

And damn! That goal suckkkked donkey balls!

There’s not nearly as much actual diving as people like to say there is.

Not diving per se, but what the North Korean team underscores is the low priority that’s generally placed on keeping one’s balance and/or getting up quickly. I get it, it works, and if it works you can’t expect players to do otherwise. It’s just rather more odious to American sensibilities, as we typically watch sports that don’t feature this sort of behavior.

Its not so much the diving as the acting that bothers me. If someone falls down, even though they probably COULD have stayed up if their life depended on it, I can let that slide. Its the flailing around on the ground like they had just been electroshocked, writhing for 5 minutes, then they get up and run around like nothing happened.

Chile and Spain through.

Yup. We dove our way to The Euro Cup.

Onwards! The Iberian Derby is on!

Group winners! Y con un par!

Bueeeeno, bueno, bueno, bueno… O sea, que ahora nos toca jugar con Portugal, ¿eh?

Portugal had a rather lacklustre game today. I guess that they were playing it extremely safe against Brazil, knowing that a tie was most likely enough for them to go through… We’ll see how it ends up in the round of 16!

I am surprised that Switzerland was unable to do anything against Honduras… But, well… That’s life I guess.

Ever twisted your foot or ankle? Did it hurt? Could you do anything for a few minutes? Where you able to get up and walk just fine after those few minutes? Ever been kicked hard in the shins? Had the wind knocked out of you?

There are lots of injuries all of us encounter that leave us in agony for a few moments, but then we’re ok. Turns out, a lot of soccer injuries are like this as well.

Sure, sometimes there is some embellishment. But people are embellishing how often and how egregiously it actually occurs.
