2012 NHL draft and off season thread

Griffin Reinharts’ father was a pretty decent hockey player as well.

Yeah, but did he go to a rival of his father’s team?

Well, Paul did use to play for Atlanta Flames, and at one point were in the same division as the Islanders, but not really a rival.

Staal was looking to play with his brother, and he had turned down the contract that Shero has offered him. And we didn’t just get Sutter – we also took Brian Domoulin, as well as a first round draft pick. Here

Staal was going to leave – as soon as he turned down Shero’s offer, it was only a matter of time. He wanted a bigger role, he was looking to play with Eric, and with the salary cap, it was probably a good choice.

And yes, there’s definitely a possible move towards Parise – at least, that’s the rumor.

Rysto, happens all the time – Ron Hextall, of the Flyers grew up hating them because his dad used to play for the Penguins. How about players who go on and sign with rivals of their old teams?

In looking at the Penguins roster and cap situation, I think they’re targeting Suter first and foremost.

The defense, which has not been very good, currently has Martin, Orpik, Letang, Engelland and Lovejoy with Niskanen an RFA. That they shipped out Michalek, who was probably better than 3 or 4 of those guys, suggests they’re looking to bring in someone who’s better than he was and Suter’s the only guy on the market that fits the bill. Doesn’t rule out a trade of some kind, of course, but I think defense has to be their primary concern. They were the top scoring team in the League last year and even though they downgraded from Staal to Sutter, they’re still potent offensively.

A guy like Semin or Parise would be gravy, but with about $14.6m in space to work with, even if they sign Suter to the deal he probably deserves (~$6m) and not what he’ll probably get (~$7.5m), that doesn’t leave them much room to go after a $6-8m forward and sign Tangradi and/or Sullivan and/or Niskanen and sign a fourth line that won’t get absolutely crushed (right now it’s Adams, Jeffrey and Vitale).

2012 Hockey Hall of Fame inductees are:

Pavel Bure
Joe Sakic
Mats Sundin
Adam Oates.
All are very worthy inductees, but I’m really glad Bure made it. My favorite player of all time.

And Oates has a new job - coach for the Caps.

Bure is my favorite, too. 1994… playoffs: I swear, at one point, he scored a breakaway goal and was levitating across the ice.

Free agency has officially begun!! And so far nothing of note has happened. The Wings signed a back up. No word on Suter. No word on Parise. I’m thinking the longer we go without hearing something, the higher the contracts will rise.

Wings gets Samuelsson back, Wings sign Tootoo too.
First is not a surprise, 2nd one I didn’t see coming. I wonder if they are going to try to turn him into the new Holmstrom, or if they if just want to increase the nastyness they can put on the ice.

Hopefully he’ll stay on the ice and not in the box. I also hope they leave the train whistles in Nashville.

Probably means Detroit is out of Parise. Might not be a bad idea to go after Semin and/or Doan. Nash is popping up as well, but the Columbus might want a lot to trade him to a Central rival. Most rumors have Detroit annoucing Suter today. That would be nice.

Best. Birthday. Present. Ever.

Now that Asham’s gone to NY, I wonder if we’re going to be bringing MacIntyre up more often, since our only enforcer as of now is Deryk Engelland.

Question – is it considered a jersey foul if you there’s a player on your team who has the same last name as you, and you decide to wear his jersey?
Oh, I cannot WAIT until September! I have both the pre-season and the official-season starting dates marked on my calender. (A Pens calender, of course, the one from the Animal Rescue League)

4 years 16M for Hudler? Bwahahaha… I mean uhh congrats Flyers.

Actually you mean, “congrats Flames.” He signed with Calgary.

Other than that, it’s spot on. Figured somebody would pay Hudler for his one fifty point season and not for his other less spectacular ones. It’s worth noting that even his best season was still wildly inconsistent.

oops, I guess I was too busy feeling congratulatory to pay attention to the details of what I was reading

I really hope Nieuwy knows what he is doing. Seriously, Ott for Derek Roy? That doesn’t seem like a good trade to me.

Ott is garbage. He’s a marginal fourth liner whose only “value” is in shitstirring.

This is a salary dump by Buffalo and a reclamation project by Dallas.

Hefty deal for Carey Price. $6.5m cap hit for 6 years.

Third highest cap hit for a goaltender in the League with an actual salary that climbs as the contract goes on, making it harder to move should they ever want to, all but ensuring he’ll be a Canadien for the run of it. Not sure he’s worth it.

No, he is a very solid defensive center who is great on faceoffs.

OMG! Now Jagr? Trying to become the oldest team in the league? Selanne is still unsigned.
