Don’t recall that. Who knows, but the Bears restructured that deal pretty much every off-season. Would have preferred to cut bait last year and there’s more dead money now than there would have been based off the original deal if I remember correctly.
No argument. But sometimes you need to pay to play. Beers at the stadium are over priced, but I’d rather have a buzz and a lighter wallet than be thirsty.
Paying top dollar usually mitigates risk since the bust factor is lower and there’s not always a guy out there who’s out there that’s 90% as good at 75% the cost who’s also available and willing to come. It’s tough to generalize.
If I’m a GM I want a premium QB and no one else making more than $5M per year on my roster, but in that case you’re probably over paying mid level guys instead of high end guys.
I’d say everyone signed in the first days of free agency are all overpaid. Seems like it’s part of the game. Not sure the alternative is better, you either pick up veteran scraps in May or you draft for need.
Oh it is better than that, Revis is getting a $10 Million signing bonus this year, which means that $5 Million of that can be credited to the 2015 salary cap by virtue of the $20 Million option that will never be picked up. In return, by virtue of this deal, if NE declines the option, they also can’t use the franchise tag on Revis.
While the risk of a $5 million cap hit next year for someone who could be gone sounds bad, the fact is New England has a $7.5 million cap hit this year for cutting All-Pro murderer Aaron Hernandez, so they are glad to take a smaller hit next year.
Meh. I don’t have a huge opinion. I never really liked the guy, and I always thought he was a bit of a dropper, but he has shown some ability ability to run routes, catch passes and not go batshit insane, which is a positive. You’d think with Calvin on one side, anyone with a brain could find a competent #2 with a second or third round pick. But if there is one thing the Lions have proven is that they cannot draft receivers competently. So there is less to fear on that front come draft time at least.
I was a little surprised that all we got for Sproles was a 5th round pick, but that’s still better than just cutting him, which was going to happen without the trade.
I think he’s got something left in the tank. He didn’t really get hit all that much with the Saints. Should be interesting to see him in that offense…
Redskins quietly picking up a whole lot of non-brand-name players. They had a ton of holes, and though I’ve not heard of most of these guys, I guess at the very least they’ll have some decent depth.
Looks like they made their biggest move just now, signing Jason Hatcher to a 4-year 27.5m deal. He’s coming off his best year statistically, but at 32, probably on the decline.
They’re also reportedly looking at Anthony Spencer, who’s damaged goods as far as I can see. I wouldn’t sign him, but for the right price, I suppose he could be worth a stab.
They’re still looking at Ryan Clark, whose best years are well behind him, but would still be an upgrade at the safety position, which is indicative of just how bad they were last season. He could be a good mentor to the younger safeties they drafted last year.
They seem to be trying to recreate the Over the Hill Gang, is the impression I’m getting from all this.
I read somewhere that Revis has bagged more guaranteed money than any other non-QB player in history…somewhere in excess of $80 million. And that’s just his guaranteed money! Sheesh that’s a lot of coin for a DB!
Some guy on the PFT comments section suggested LaGarrett Blount as a good target for the Bears. Love that idea as Forte insurance and a goal line option. I suppose it’s a little too similar to the Bush, Barber and Taylor signings but I still love it.
I guess landing a 6th rounder in the draft would be better if they can figure it out.
Now the Panthers have lost both Ted Ginn and Captain Munnerlyn. Ginn was very valuable in the return game and their third WR. Munnerlyn was a bright spot in the secondary.
Jonathan Martin of “here’s even more evidence that Richie Incognito is a psychotic festering bag of human garbage” fame has been traded from the Dolphins to the 49ers for a conditional 7th round pick in 2015. It reunites Martin with Jim Harbaugh, his coach at Stanford. Kudos to Harbaugh for defending Martin in the Wells report and giving him another shot at playing in the NFL.
The best part for me, as a 49ers fan, is that Martin has experience starting and at both left and right tackle. He might not be super great, but we’ve needed a backup at tackle. Recently it’s been starting right guard Alex Boone, meaning two spots on the line get downgraded if a tackle gets hurt. (Although I have to say he played well when Joe Staley was out for a game or two.)
I think Harbaugh’s intensity and the apparent dynamic of the 49ers locker room will be good for Martin. The goal is still to get him to play tough (and borderline dirty like you have to play in the trenches), but not be an asshole to him to do it. It will especially help that he’ll be competing for only a reserve spot, not a starter.
The Bears are keeping Peanut Tillman. Early reports are of a 1-year $3.5M deal.
If those numbers are true, this is fantastic news. Peanut is a class-act, and has been a great player. Hopefully last year’s injury plagued season was a fluke and we can keep him on the field at a near-Pro Bowl level for 13+ games this year. Also that doesn’t really restrict us on anything else we want to do this elsewhere.
Little weird to have Peanut making less than Jennings if last year was a fluke, but as long as Peanut is okay with it, it’s all good. Still wouldn’t be shocked to see the Bears grab a CB in the first 2 rounds, but this makes it much less stressful.
ESPN Chicago listed these cap numbers for the recent signings.
Pretty good work from Emery I’d say. Assuming MD Jennings & Donte Rosario are in that $700k range and Tillman is as reported, we’re in really good shape to add 1 or 2 more guys. Probably bringing back Britton on the cheap and Wootten at a moderate cost would be ideal, not sure about Melton, rumors are he’s a bit on the lazy side so coming off an injury and arrest aren’t he isn’t exactly a hot item. Still, for a cheap prove-it deal I’d be in if we can afford it. I think I prefer Wootten and the rookie DTs to be named later if it’s an either-or proposition.
