2015-16 Barclays Premier League Thread

Leicester win the league by 10 and didn’t take their foot of the gas after clinching. An amazing professional achievement.

Tottenham are the anti-Leicester.

cough

Pretty incredible situation at Old Trafford, with the game called off and a controlled explosion used to detonate a suspicious device. It will be interesting to learn, after the investigation, if the device itself was a hoax bomb, or the real thing.

WTF was going on with Spurs today? They took 2 points from their last four games. Quite a meltdown to end the season after playing great football nearly all year.

They lost one of their most important creative players to suspension and then lost their most important defensive player to suspension.

Ryan Mason is shit.

Sorry, but even missing two key players doesn’t explain today’s performance. Every team has to deal with key players being out at some time or other, and while it makes a difference, it shouldn’t turn a team that contended for the league title all year into a Saturday-afternoon pub team.

Any further information about Old Trafford?

No, it shouldn’t. My guess is that they just switched off knowing that they would finish in the Champions League. I know Poche has said he didn’t really care if they finished above Arsenal and that once the title was out of reach he was focused on other things. Also they are all really young. Maybe they just collectively chocked? Also they were playing with ten men and the corpse of Ryan Mason.

Looking on the bright side, it’ll probably mean a contract extension for Wenger.

A bit of a farce in the end. It was reported earlier that it was a convincing and elaborate hoax bomb - a device made to look like a bomb, but not actually viable.

It’s now reported that it was a training device used by a company that had been using the stadium this week, perhaps for security/anti-terror training, and they left it behind afterwards. :smack:

Wow, that’s some pretty impressive ineptitude right there.

Oh, oh dear.

Well, even an optimist such as I won’t pretend United will get the 19-0 they need in the rearranged match. Even if it was against Spurs :). Grudging congratulations to Man City, can’t say United deserved anything more. The question is, do I want the point that will take us into the Europa League? I think on balance I do, on the basis that United seem far more likely to mount a serious challenge for the Europa League than the Premier League next season.

I can’t fucking stand it.

Who would ever have imagined that such a thing could happen to Spurs?!

:o

There’s always next season. They’re bound to Woolwich it up.

In Arsene we trust…
At the end of the day, if you’d offered me third place at the start of the season I’d have bitten your hand off at the shoulder. It’d be nice to get into the Champions League Quarter Finals again.

(For the benefit of the resident Gooners I should explain that the Quarter Finals are the next round of matches after you’ve gone out. Hope that helps.)

Arsène Wenger has done so many great things for the club, and shown such dedication and loyalty, that only short-sighted and thick-headed fans would wish him anything other than to leave under his own terms.

In any case, we already knew he would be our manager for another season at least, and I for one am glad for it. Our best chance for improved results next year is to keep him. There is no one out there right now we can get who would be significantly more likely to do better than Wenger.

You don’t really need me to explain this, do you? :stuck_out_tongue:

You were right about only half of this.

Really? Is that the best you’ve got?

Tottenham Hotspur

Number of seasons played in the Champions League: 1
Furthest progression: Quarter-final (with Spurs humiliated 5-0 over two legs)

Arsenal

Number of seasons played in the Champions League: 18
Furthest progression: Final

By the way, mascaroni, what’s up with tossing around Woolwich all the time, as if you think you’re getting in jabs with it? What, do you think there’s something about Arsenal’s past residency at the Royal Arsenal that’s somehow shameful or embarrassing? I have news for you: It isn’t.

Spurds fan: Heh, heh! “Woolwich!” Heh! Heh! >snigger< >snigger< Heh, heh!
Arsenal fans:  Um, we’re proud of our club’s long and storied history. Aren’t you?

Incidentally, the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich had quite a lot to do with Britain’s successes in a couple notable altercations during the 20th century, which you may have heard of, not to mention critical importance to Britain for a couple previous centuries. Tell me again why you think referring to Arsenal F.C. as “Woolwich” is somehow a dig?

So, by all means: proceed, senator.

Woolwich is no longer in the club’s name, after the move to North London in 1913, but keeping “Arsenal” pays homage to the club’s origins. I know you’re still grouchy about this.

No one else is.

Number of times Arsenal progressed to CL quarter-finals (or further): 6

I’m reminded of this old tale from back in the days of St. Totteringham.
