Don’t read that one single thread. Problem solved.
Of course, and there is no need to, the OP is talking about that thread and I had check what else was added, no need to check more than one page to find examples about what the OP is talking about.
I think I said earlier that I wasn’t even aware of that thread until this thread was started. I read that last couple of pages of it and saw all kinds of stupid shit. Based on that, I decided to never open the thread again. Life is good.
Yes, but the title of this is housecleaning so I guess I have to make the note of never visiting your house. ![]()
More seriously, the OP is referring to take the trash out and I do get what you are talking about, it can take care of itself by letting others know that they should not reply to that poster or to ignore the thread and that needs to be remarked in discussions like this one.
Heck, I even decided not to make complaints or pits against him, after all I could be wrong but since others have noticed I had to remark on all the underhanded thinks FX is doing to keep that pile of trash on the top.
Some variations on the “F” are allowed in The Pit.
That shouldn’t be a loophole. If FX posts several posts in a row with no other posters replying, then it really shouldn’t matter what is in his posts - he’s still bumping his own thread.
Oh, I know it’s unrealistic for people to just let it go and move on. “Somebody make him shut up! I keep coming in here and he’s still talking the same shit. Shut him up now!” Uh, why not just not go in there? “Because I’m required to come in here and see what stupid shit he’s saying.”
Crap, I can’t even quote what you did there - your code is buried in the nested quote. Seriously? Don’t do that shit.
I would argue (and I think I’m on firm historical grounds here) that if it weren’t for him bumping the thread continuously, the thread would have disappeared months ago.
[snip]
So, I’m not arguing that the thread be closed because I don’t like it, I’m arguing that it’s been effectively dead and only remains active because the OP repeatedly bumps it. In fact, instead of closing it, I’d consider simply forbidding the bumps by FX to be a perfectly acceptable solution. Then, if there is a desire to keep it open, it’ll stay open. If there isn’t, it will fade into oblivion.
So, have you tried reporting his posts? Because I doubt the moderators are reading it for content. Perhaps you could report him for repeated bumps, and make explicit in the report some of these issues like quoting people who have left the thread to make it look like there’s a conversation when he’s the only one posting. I know, it’s a bit of work, but sometimes it helps to connect the dots for the moderators who aren’t following closely. And if you’re the one who is worked up over the thread, you should have the motivation to make the extra work.

Read my early posts, I already know that, the rule specifies that the overuse of even the allowed ones can get you into trouble (from the rules on language on the Pit):
Expressions not referred to above but which are normally considered vulgar (e.g., asshole, dick, prick, bitch, kiss my ass) are subject to the following limitations:
- occasional use only
- no posts consisting solely or mainly of vulgarities.
Incidentally those limitations are for the ones mentioned, “fuck you” and variants are clearly marked as restricted and in that thread FX regularly uses it against specific posters.
That shouldn’t be a loophole. If FX posts several posts in a row with no other posters replying, then it really shouldn’t matter what is in his posts - he’s still bumping his own thread.
And I agree, but reporting it (even with examples) led to nothing.

And see my early reply, as I pointed before at least I can understand that many (and even moderators) that encountered that poster do know what he is doing. (And I’m happy to know that at least the record shows that I’m not the only one that noticed or how that poster is seen by many)
As it is the pit, I do agree that the rules are more relaxed, and if it was one type of rule it would not be much of a bother. But I do not think that we should allow a multi rule breaker to continue like if that is OK.
Mod Note
Accusations of trolling are a violation of our rules, as clarified here:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=18036218&postcount=35
Any further accusations of trollery are likely to result in a warning. Don’t do this again.
We reserve the right to tell posters with an agenda to dial back or stop posting on a particular subject. You’re free to call attention to obsessive posting in ATMB, but we’ll be the judge of whether action is warranted. In the case under discussion the poster has largely confined his remarks to a single thread, and others are debating him. That’s what the board is for; as things stand we see no need to take action. To persist in making silly arguments for many months is not, in itself, against our rules - only if we tell you to stop and you don’t.
Oh. My. God.
While we are on the subject: let us say I am the OP. Some posters go off on a hijack. is is Ok or Jr Modding to ask that they desist and get back to the subject?
Whats the right way to word it?
I would use some variation of, “Hey, I really wanted to discuss my OP. Can we get back to it?”
But it has no force behind it, you have to realize. Sometimes threads just wander off like little butterflies. They do what they do.
If you suspect someone is intentionally - for whatever reason - attempting to hijack or derail a thread then you should report the post and see if a moderator agrees with you.

Are you allowed to say the T word in a Private Message?
Are you allowed to say the T word in a Private Message?
Sure why not?
Edit: let me clarify, do you mean to a mod or another poster? No that it changes the answer much. If you are trying to bring our attention to something we of course what you to be as descriptive as possible so we can understand your concern.
As for communicating between posters, I haven’t had to deal with any issues involving PMs. IIRC we’ve tried to stay out of the business of private conversations unless there has been something really bad going on.
It was a joke.
So, have you tried reporting his posts?
I have in the past, in reference to the endless self-bumps.

And just when I thought that the thread was going to disappear FX did bump it again just now.

It’s all cool, though. He has a Get Out Of Jail Free Pass. I wonder what you have to do to get one of those.
Actually, I don’t. It’s a bit disgusting to think about.
We’ve explained our position on this. We acknowledge that some people don’t like it. That’s pretty much all there is to say. Thanks and good night.
Good Night.
