The Daily Mail was of course immune to the irony of putting up a glowing tribute to Sachs (who came from Germany to the UK as a child when his family fled persecution the Nazis in 1938) next to one of their usual articles complaining about migrants and refugees coming to the UK.

Indeed - Sachs was born in Berlin to a Jewish father and Catholic mother. I suspect he preferred that no one mention the war.
Indeed, I remember still an interesting and touching documentary he did for the BBC just before the Wall came down, where he took his wife around Berlin, and reminisced about his childhood, even meeting a former neighbour. I’m not sure the BBC will allow this to play outside the UK, but it’s still online at:
