As the Death Shroom said his mastery of the 2018 game has my blessing. I’m having computer problems and Dopers may have noticed I haven’t been on the Dope much. I’m debating what new kind of computer to get, maybe someone can PM recommendations. Computers are like cars to me, I can drive them but know little about what makes them tick. All I need is something simple, so I can watch Youtube videos, surf the Net, and play on the Dope.
Assuming I get set up well I may do a hostile takeover for 2019!
How would having it in one thread affect you or anyone? Some longer posts or 2 posts from some people in the beginning. A separate category at the end. The usual tasteless jokes in the middle. Not really anything different for the players but some extra work for the death master.
I really dislike this idea. The should be an incentive to be the first person to list a pick for the year to counter the disincentive of having your picks stolen by others, and all picks by all persons should be public, IMO.
But I’m on board with all the changes listed in the OP.
I like the idea in theory, but how do all those lists get posted on the Board? Does phungi post dozens of private messages on January 1? Is there simply a master database with all the picks on it posted on January 1? Or do we never get to see everyone’s lists and have to be satisfied with a monthly points update?
Oh no! Everyone simply must see the other entries (once the entry deadline has passed), that’s part of the fun! I imagine the main organizer could list all the individual entries after the deadline passes.
Someone here mentioned some Google thing that might help. I didn’t understand that but anything that would automate the process and help the organizer would be nice.
Using the PM method there IS a big incentive to coming up with a particularly good death candidate* and it doesn’t matter when you do it because no one else can see that you made that pick. So if you come up with a really clever one, no one can copy off of your brilliant idea and that’s worth a LOT.
If TPTB insisted on some bonus for picking a death candidate first that determination could be made by looking through the order in which the entry PM’s were sent. But really, if no one is allowed to be lazy and copy off others then there isn’t any need to be concerned with who picked someone first.
I did offer a few posts ago to create a Google Form instead of requiring the mod to go through a bunch of PM’s. Is that not helpful? It would generate a spreadsheet for the game moderator and keep our lists secret until January 1.
I LOVE this idea, especially if we can finalize the submissions after Jan 1 and then open access or make the final postings public. Also, all 'dopers can share their own lists AFTER Jan 1 deadline has passed.
One question/problem: how do we handle the posting of revisions prior to the Jan 1 deadline?
Having used both PCs and Macs since the damned things were invented, I always recommend getting a Macintosh, especially if the extra $$$ isn’t an issue.
That said, if you are not “interacting” in the form of downloading/uploading/storing, a Tablet may be the way to go (YouTube, Internet, email, etc)…
I am going to go along with this suggestion. I like the idea of a theme and non-theme list and would submit both but
“The Themed List must have a name different than the 'Doper’s SDMB profile name”
could become an issue if someone creates a sock or comes up with some otherwise creative idea of how to have a different name. Yeah, you can spell out just how you want it but some of us are going to screw it up anyway. Maybe it would be a lot easier to have a
Celebrity Death Pool 2018 thread
and a
Themed Celebrity Death Pool 2018 thread
Most reports of demises would probably be in the former (or not) but the latter would get its own scorecard.
Also for those of us slow on the up-take and abnormally thick at 2:06 in the AM maybe ask/require that the person submitting tell us just what the darn theme is. I have one in the works for
“A Bridge Too Far Over the River Styx”
with actors and actresses from said movie that are still alive. But for someone to figure that out just from the list of names? From that it would just look like a random assortment of Hollywood characters. Inquiring minds want to know just how other brains operate ----- without all the messy kidnapping-and-sawing-off-the-top-of-a-persons-head stuff.
There should a be a posting rule that prohibits posts like this one in the Death Pool thread
I don’t see a reason why posters can’t put a name and a brief bio about the dead person in the post. With posts like this one, I got to open up yet another tab and read about some person that I might not give a rats patootie about. And then close it.
