I created a thread before seeing your post but I think it might deserve its own thread anyway. Thanks for the info.
He was one of a list of great defensive players to come out of the University of Illinois, so I followed his career pretty closely. I think it’s maybe a mistake to leap to the CTE conclusion here. He was young and did not play a position known for frequent repeated head trauma. Even at those positions, CTE related issues tend to not show up acutely at this early age. He demonstrated some erratic behavior back in college. And in general, it’s just lazy to assume every bad thing that happens to a football player must be CTE. I think it’s possible that this is run of the mill bipolar disorder or depression, and you can never rule out drug and alcohol addiction. Let the science do its thing, hopefully his family allows them to do an autopsy.
Word.
I think that depression or the like, unrelated to CTE, could well be a factor. The stories I’m reading today detail that he had a hard childhood, with an absentee father and a drug-addicted mother, until he and his siblings were finally adopted by his grandmother.
Yup. Were I a betting man I’d say it’s the unholy combination of bi-polar disorder and addiction. But people die young for sad and mundane reasons too, maybe the poor guy had an aneurysm. I assume he and his brother were close, will be interesting if we hear from him at any point.
Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice being sought investigation of hit-and-run accident
Dashcam footage of crash involving Rashee Rice’s car released (larrybrownsports.com)
It appears that Rice was driving a rented Lamborghini that was racing a Corvette on a freeway near Dallas when the two cars lost control, causing a major accident with several injuries. The Lambo and Corvette drivers both fled the scene on foot.
These idiots need to have some serious consequences. But knowing the NFL, he’ll probably miss a game or two at most. If he has to go out of pocket for all the damage that’ll eat up more than half of his rookie earnings. Real 1000 IQ move.
Works for me. If Caleb gets a second contract with whatever team drafts him, or the pick up his rookie option, I win. If they cut or trade him, you win.
The downside is I now have to trust whatever team drafts him to not screw him up, which could be tough if its the Bears.
Stakes?
[Moderating]
A reminder that betting for any stakes beyond bragging rights is not allowed on this board.
Depends what kind of charges get filed, which I suppose depends on the severity of the injuries. Henry Ruggs is in prison and probably has no chance at resuming his NFL career – but, of course, his vehicular idiocy killed someone.
Stefon Diggs plus a 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Texans for a 2025 second-round pick (via the Minnesota Vikings) to Buffalo.
The trade comes a day after Diggs responded to a social media user’s declaration that he wasn’t essential to Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s success by replying, “You sure?”
I guess we’ll see.
Bills trade Stefon Diggs, a 2025 5th and a 2024 sixth round draft pick for a 2025 second round draft pick with the Texans. Just like in Minnesota, Diggs’ diva attitude gets him traded away. The Texans add a hard-to-keep happy target hog to an already impressive young WR crew. The Bills have now lost their top 2 WRs in this off-season, and will likely be drafting at least 2 WRs this year, but dont pick until #28, so the top 4, maybe 5, WRs will be off the board by then.
Tough go for the Bills.
I like this trade for Buffalo. They unload a declining malcontent and get a premium pick, albeit next year.
We’ve seen KC and Mahomes continue to succeed without big-name WRs. Can Buffalo and Allen do the same?
(Or will the Bills put together a big package to trade up for the Bears’ #9 pick? You know I have to explore a Bears angle whenever possible. )
That sort of gets at my point. If you wait until something terrible happens to have severe consequences, there’s no deterrent effect. I would hope he gets hammered with a heavy suspension, criminal charges and fines. If they don’t, another Ruggs situation is inevitable. Let’s not wait for someone else to die.
Chase Claypool is available.
Now’s the time to do it, this draft is lousy with decent to possibly great receivers.
If only they’d have gotten a 2024 draft pick back.
Edit: Part of me wonders if Diggs created some bad habits in Allen. He definitely forced the ball to him a lot and at times he seemed to ignore the overall scheme on some plays. Maybe that’s just a flaw in Allen’s game, but maybe having Diggs in his ear every huddle was a factor. If the Bills can assemble a more balanced WR room with 2-3 quality options and no clear #1, maybe the overall offense could improve a little. Or maybe that’s just a silly idea.
$31m in dead cap is…brutal. Higher than any non-QB is history. As it stands they’re looking at…oh $50k left in cap space post-draft, and $21m over the cap for next year. The Bills would have to cut cap STILL to take the Bears #9 pick, as that pick is $4m in cap this season alone, and trading both the 28th pick AND their second-round pick leaves them $500k short, unless they sweeten the pot with a player with little or no dead cap as well. It’s the downside to an all-in push to win a championship when your stars don’t play like stars.
Hopefully four injuries is enough of a negative consequence to warrant some significant punishment.
I can’t think of a single team who would be better off with Chase Claypool on the roster, and I defended his mild celebration a few years ago that probably cost the Steelers a game. Omar Khan fleeced the Bears with that trade.
Perhaps I needed to add the /s to that one. Lol.
Wild that Diggs garnered a similar return, so yeah, we were absolutely hood winded on that one.
Separate topic. I’ve recently started watching some tape on Jayden Daniels and I have to confess to being a bit nonplussed. With an admittedly cursory study he looks an awful lot like Justin Fields to me. An amazing athlete and runner, though a lot slighter, but ultimately a guy who doesn’t really know how to play QB. This is masked in college by the fact that he has some extraordinary WR talent to help him, just like Fields did.
