2024 US Senate Elections

Casey loses. Damn.

Fuck the Green and Liberation parties.

New York Times and CNN apparently haven’t gotten the memo yet (5:15 Eastern, Thursday) - and isn’t there an automatic recount in PA if it’s this close?

Maybe? idk

Yep, Casey loses by around 32000 votes. Green got 64000, and Libertarian got 87K. If the Green party votes went to Casey, he would have won.

Those minor parties are hurting America.

Don’t expect Ranked Choice Voting in red states any time soon…

If the margin is 0.5% or less.

Ranked choice voting just got shot down in Nevada.

And everywhere it was on the ballot except Washington, D.C., I believe.

It’s starting to get tight, Gallego up about 41k with up to 725k ballots left to count. The slow counting in AZ has been complicated by the two-sheet (four page) ballot (thanks to a crap ton of ballot measures put on by the legislature) which is taking longer to process than the usual single-sheet (two page) ballot. The drip-drip-drip will continue through the weekend.

Then of course if Lake loses she will spend at least the next two years filing court challenges. The last challenges she filed about her 2022 governor’s race loss just got tossed this week.

Nevada has been called for Democrat Jacky Rosen, leaving only Arizona uncalled.

Gallego is currently up 48k with somewhere between 300k and 400k left to count. Just under 300k are just awaiting tabulation: 124k in Maricopa (strong Gallego lean), 87k in Pima (very strong Gallego lean), 30k in each of Cochise, Yuma, and Yavapai (all very strong Lake lean). Newsmax has called for Gallego, not aware of anyone else calling yet.

Also 68k early ballots still being processed (a chunk of these are awaiting “curing”) and 44k provisionals (many of which will not be counted).

Still have my fingers crossed about the one uncalled house race, with the R leading by 2500 votes but waiting on votes from Pima and Cochise counties. If the D makes a comeback that would be a flip.

Some outlets have already called it for Gallego.

Gallego sitting with a 66k lead (2.2%) lead. Lake would have to take 62% of the remaining votes, most of which are coming from Maricopa and Pima counties. Very unlikely.

That sound you hear is Kari Lake revving up her election denial machine. Not sure if it is going to get any traction this time. It mainly ran up attorney’s fees last time around.

AP, NBC, and CNN call the race for Gallego.

AZ 6th Congressional District still not called, but R is up 4900 votes. Possible D flip, but looking less possible than ever.

She can’t go with “rigged election” this time since Trump has sanctioned this election as a-ok. Guess she’s just a loser. And we know what Trump thinks of that so good-bye to her political career. At least someone in this nightmare gets what they deserve.

With the Gallego call, we know (absent some sort of miracle in PA) the final disposition of the Senate – 53 Republicans and 47 Democrats. There may still be some changes in personnel should Trump appoint some Republican Senators to his Administratio (e.g. Rubio), but they’ll all certainly be from states where a Republican Governor can appoint their replacement.

It’s hard to overstate how much of a disaster this is. With Romney gone, only Collins and Murkowski remain of those Senators occasionally willing to push back on Trump during his first term. And with the VP tiebreaker, Republicans can lose up to three Republican Senators on any vote. All of Trump’s nominees are getting confirmed. This is actually great for Collins (who’s up in 2026) – she can freely vote against a few nominees to demonstrate her “independence” without riling up the base too much since they’ll be confirmed anyway.

I think it’s likely that the filibuster on legislation will be nuked this term. Whoever the new Majority Leaders is, he’ll be in a weaker position than McConnell was vis-a-vis his caucus. When Trump starts loudly demanding that Republicans kill the filibuster on some key component of his agenda, Senate Republicans will oblige. Susan Collins will wail at the incivility of it all.

It’s going to be a long two years (most likely four years, quite possibly six years and more).

I suspect she’ll say the election was A-OK in showing that Trump carried Arizona, but completely crooked, corrupt and stolen as to her run for the U.S. Senate. Cognitive dissonance is part of the goddamn GOP brand these days.

Yeah. There were plenty of them last time claiming the election was rigged because Biden won it, but was obviously entirely fair when they themselves won it – on the same ballots.

Meanwhile, in the Keystone State:

Very, very sorry to see Sen. Sherrod Brown lose here in Ohio. His thoughts now: https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/11/16/sherrod-brown-democrats-00189956
