I really would count it even if it technically does not. However, now I"m even thinking about it, I’m not sure. Sean Baker did four individual tasks: wrote, directed, edited(!), and produced.
I see Bong Joon Ho did not edit his movie. Yeah, that is a separate individual tasks.
I guess it does make sense. I have heard some early buzz on Mickey 17, his next movie. I’m hearing…not going to win a lot of awards.
Edit: I see his editor was also the editor for the excellent Train to Busan, another movie that could have won some Oscars.
I’m not a Conan fan, but I thought his hosting was very competent if not especially hilarious. The kind of host who is likely to be invited back.
It was a heartfelt speech with an important message but yes, not only far too long, but he was so self-absorbed that he actually had the gall to tell them to turn the music off because he wasn’t done yet. Not a good look, and it undercut the passion of his message.
On a different topic, watching the In Memoriam segment, I don’t think I was aware that in the past year we lost Bob Newhart, Donald Sutherland, and James Earl Jones. I was a big fan of Newhart and probably would have remembered if I had seen an announcement.
I think they’ve done the only sensible thing which is to not attempt to list everyone. In the past, they tried to do as many as they could squeeze in and always missed some. And they can’t just do known actors because the Academy includes all those behind-the-scenes people. So now they do nice overview of some that were lost and put the rest on the website.
And it should be a mix of well-known actors, composers and directors, and lesser-known (especially to the general public) costumers, agents, technicians and so forth. Though I wonder if only Academy members are included?
Michelle Trachtenberg was also excluded. Perhaps understandable as being very recent. Or perhaps she’s considered more a TV personality, instead of the title role of a very popular kid’s movie. Or perhaps they screwed up with this ommission.
They could do that. But I guarantee they will still miss some people. The current system is better in that they can just say that they don’t include everyone.
On a different topic, I’ve just watched A Complete Unknown, and I’m pissed that Timothée Chalamet didn’t get Best Actor. Man, that guy became Bob Dylan. And then Adrien Brody got the win and made an ass of himself in the acceptance speech.
