Oh, so HE is the adultery guy. Bakker is the swindle everyone for money guy? I remember Tammy Faye Bakker and I heard she really turned around before she died.
Anyway, both are probably swindlers, but I mix the two up.
I always confuse them, too. Bakker was accused of drugging and raping Jessica Hahn, as was another preacher, John Wesley Fletcher. She was given a hush money payment of $278,000 that was paid out of Bakker’s church’s account.
I was a kid in the 80’s. My parents, both Christians(as am I), always warned against TV preachers like Swaggart, Bakker, Robert Tilton, etc.
It’s just a cash grab, they thought. Despite reputation these guys bring, there are real pastors out there; they just tend to avoid TV and begging for money constantly.
Gary England, meteorologist who as a TV weatherman pushed his station to get its own doppler radar resulting in the first time doppler radar was ever used in a commercial setting, created the little emergency weather insert that would show in the lower right-hand corner of TV programs so that people could be warned about inclement weather without having their regularly scheduled program interrupted, created Storm Tracker, consulted on (and had a cameo in) the movie Twister (original version), and helped develop storm warning systems that would work on the internet, dead at 85 from complications from a stroke.
Depends on from whose perspective. From the fundagelical perspective, it was the multiple flings with sex workers, as has been noted. From my very non-fundie Christian perspective, it was just the usual business of finding bogeymen to blame the sins of the world on - liberals, homosexuals, pornography, etc. - so that they didn’t have to look at their own selves and find any sin there any worse than losing their temper in traffic.
