2026 Nobel Peace Prize Announced

Interesting, though I think Mr Girnus made a mistake when he said

And here, uff da, is the detail I treasure, the one that makes me smile into my coffee. The nomination deadline is the 31st of January. He took office on the 20th. So for all the phone calls, all the posts, all the gilded lobbying, the only nominations that could possibly count for this year’s prize were filed in the first eleven days of his term, before he had, by his own arithmetic, ended a single one of the eight wars.

Trump took office on the 20th of January of last year. (Though to his credit, Mr Girnus admits to embarrassment at the premature award given to Obama.)

I think you’re right, unless he was referring to last year’s nomination process and award (when Trump was also pressing to get the prize). Or maybe he conflated the two.

I think he just made a mistake.

Irrelevant to his overall post though, which was some great writing. Love how he basically called Trump a Nazi at the end. And never once mentioned his name.

That was a good read.

I’m reading a book about the history of dynamite (and anarchy and detectives). Dynamite was invented by Nobel. It was quickly used by Anarchists in the very first suicide bombing, and in so many other plots and assignations and attempts. It was an equalizer, a way for common folk to get the attention of the people in charge. Violent and destructive; “the infernal machine”.

Anyways, word gets out that Nobel has died. He did not, but he got to read his obituary in the paper. The papers said “The Merchant of Death” died, for inventing dynamite and the terror it’s caused. Nobel did not like that and took steps to rehab his image which led to the Nobel Peace Prize. Pretty effective rehab. Or so the story goes.

No he’s not. It’s satire.

Snopes

Well, crap. I guess it was too good to be true.

I haven’t been snookered this badly since I bought into the urban legend that claimed that Kurt Vonnegut wrote and gave the “Wear Sunscreen” commencement speech back in 1997.

My urban legend/fraud radar is usually more attuned to things like this, and I should have checked it out first. (I hope it’s not a harbinger of things to come and that I’m now going to fall for some online scam…)

At least I didn’t forward it on to anyone other than you folks…

ETA: Although I will say it’s well worth reading, even if it is satire. It’s very funny and well-written.

Wait, I thought that @Czarcasm won that one.
