21st Annual Steelers March to the Super Bowl Thread

It’s that time of the year, folks. While I no longer drink, this series is now old enough to pour one, and even though I’m not around that much anymore, mostly because outside of football I’m not as combative as I used to be, I’m going to be posting these until the SDMB is gone or I am, whichever comes first.

So, let’s get this out of the way: the Steelers are going to the Super Bowl this year. In 21 years I’ve only been right about that three times and I’ve only seen 2 wins, but this isn’t about reality, this is about rabid partisan fandom. I hate all of your teams and hope that none of them win from now until the heat death of the universe. My tribe is better than yours.

OK, now that I’m done with that, back to the real world. The AFC North clearly goes through Cincinnati. Joe Burrow just signed an outrageous contract so he’s going to be there for a while, the receiving corps is really good, the defense is solid. Their weaknesses are Joe Mixon, who had a bad season last year and is facing domestic violence charges so may not finish out the season anyway, and the offensive line. Burrow isn’t exactly made out of glass, but he’s not Ben Roethlisberger, either. If they can’t protect him he’ll miss some time, and that will put the division up in the air.

The Browns? Depends on Watson. Even if he plays well they’re looking at the basement, because the division is utterly stacked.

The Rats signed Lamar Jackson to an extension and hey, they finally gave him someone to throw to. He’s claiming 6000 yards passing this year, which is absurd given his history, but he should put up good numbers. The defense, surprisingly, is the weak link. The secondary is vulnerable and the Rats should see a lot of passing against them.

As for the rest of the AFC, the Chiefs already lost, granted without Kelce, but injuries are part of the game. Nobody cared that Pittsburgh didn’t have Watt for 6 games last year, so that’s no excuse. The Bills have some internal conflict and never seem to be able to get over the hump. The Jets have A-A-Ron and that should be a big improvement, the Dolphins are tough as long as Tua doesn’t get killed… the AFC East, like the North, is going to eat itself up. Out West the Chargers have to be the favorites, but again, they always find a way to blow it.

In the NFC the favorites have to be the damn dirty Iggles, who are trying mightily to become Georgia North. Seriously, they should send Kirby Smart a ring if they win it all (which they won’t). The Lions (!) are real this year and are a threat. And the Niners, who Pittsburgh opens with, depend on Brock Purdy after admitting colossal defeat on Trey Lance. They better be right or that ship will sink fast. Sam Darnold is a bust and he won’t take them anywhere.

But anyway, on to my beloved Steelers. The defense is led by two future Hall of Famers, Minkah Fitzpatrick and TJ Watt, and perhaps two more in Cam Heyward and Patrick Peterson. They got Joey Porter Jr. essentially for free as the first pick in the second round when he would have gone at 17 if the Patsies hadn’t given away Broderick Jones to keep him off the Jets. The only weakness on defense is the linebacking corps, though Nick Herbig appears to be a steal from the fourth round. So I’m not worried too much about the defense.

The offense revolves around Kenny Pickett. Why is everyone sleeping on him this year? Last year he was a rookie in a monster division who suffered some growing pains and some injuries and he still closed out the season with two consecutive comeback victories. With a year under his belt and time with Diontae Johnson, Pat Friermuth, and George Pickens, he should take a big leap. The improved offensive line needs only be adequate and more efficient passing will result, which should open up the run for Najee Harris and Jaylon Warren. Pickett had a perfect preseason and everyone looked ready to roll. I know, preseason. But I saw what I saw, and if they get even 90% of that in the regular season Pittsburgh will be utter beasts.

The predictions I’ve seen from so-called reputable pundits, not just homers like me, have varied from 7 wins and the basement all the way to Super Bowl champions. I lean toward the latter, but it could be anything. One thing I am certain of is that they will win at least 9 games, because Tomlin. The streak will at least continue.

That said, I’m predicting that they’ll have at least a shot at winning the division in the last week, if not taking it outright before then. I think a lot of the prognosticators are going to be eating crow at the end of the year. After that, who knows? All I know is that I can’t wait to find out.

Enjoy the season, folks.

That (first week) went well. Ouch. 49ers pack a punch on both sides of the ball. Cleveland looked scarily good on defense and will be in any game they put up 200+ yards on the ground. Baltimore - 6000 yards, nope and the injury bug is already biting. The Steelers will get their act together, edge into the playoffs, and fade out.

Good luck.

It was an ill omen when I went to Latrobe to observe the Steeler practice in August. It was a rainy day and was eventually rained out, so I didn’t get to see much. Like this game. Did anyone other than TJ show up? Hope some one wakes up by the Cleveland game.

Jesus Christ, the Steelers’ offense was hot garbage tonight. The defense, however, was pretty stout. They won that game.

I feel pretty bad for Nick Chubb, though. That injury was catastrophic. I don’t want his team to win, but I don’t want anyone to get hurt, either.

So for the offense, it’s back to the drawing board. That was a truly pathetic showing, and I don’t know why. They have everything they need.

Oh, wait, I do know why. Matt fucking Canada. All that talent, hamstrung by the worst playcalling in the history of football. Marty Schottenheimer is a genius compared to this guy, and until now he was the most predictable play caller of all time.

But, a win is a win. And, strangely, the Bengals are in the basement. They were supposed to be the class of the division. Looks like that injury to Burrow is worse than they’re letting on.

Only caught the 4th quarter, so I didnt see the stinkfest beforehand, but I was impressed by the Steelers resiliency and guts. Good win for them.

All hope is not lost. I’ve been kinda busy these past few weeks trying to buy a business so I’ve not been able to do much but watch the games.

The defense is fantastic. Even without Heyward and considering the blowout loss against the Texans they’re doing their jobs.

The offense is another thing altogether. Anemic wouldn’t even begin to describe it. Fire Matt Canada. Year over year the offense has gotten worse, and still he has a job. Even today until the end the offense produced two whole field goals. With all the talent they have that is asinine. The defense is doing the work, the offense is predictable and unproductive.

But, today, a win is a win, and that’s really the number that matters.

It’s been a very long time since I’ve revisited this, not because I’m indifferent but because I’ve been busy buying my own business. So, starting next week, I’m working for the guy until the new year, whereupon ownership transfers to me. My hours will be cut in half, and after the first few years my income will likely double. So that’s exciting.

But there’s still been time for football, and today something extraordinary happened: Pittsburgh finally, FINALLY fired Matt Canada. As offensive coordinator he never, not once, put up a 400 yard game, far and away the worst performance in the league. They are somehow 6-4, but if they could actually put points on the board instead of leaning on the defense and praying they might actually put some games away.

Now we get to see what Kenny Pickett can do. So far he’s been mediocre, to be charitable, and maybe that’s all he’ll ever be. But when the playcalling is so predictable that the fans know what’s coming, let alone players who study these things intently, there is little possibility that the plays will be successful. Just three days ago Pittsburgh needed only a first down to win. That’s it. The first play was a run that Cleveland called out so completely there were 3 guys in the backfield to blow it up. It never had a chance, because they knew what was coming. There is no variation, no innovation, and no adjustments. The only success is in the 4th quarter when Pickett was playing schoolyard ball trying desperately to stay in the game.

So, now, maybe things improve. If they do then Art Rooney II has a lot to answer for, because he refused to do anything about it for so long. Or maybe what we saw is actually what they are. If so, the last 7 weeks will be maddening and the management will have to figure out a path to improvement that doesn’t piss another season or two away.

Canada’s release is earth-shaking in Pittsburg terms. Reading another article, the last time a coach or coordinator was let go mid-season was ---- 1941 !!! Pittsburg has been a rock of consistency for players and coaches.

I expect a good response from the players (Oakland Las Vegas Raiders popped a bit with McDaniel gone).

Better example would be the Bills, who fired their offensive coordinator and then the team promptly hung 30+ on the Jets defense.

The Bills, who only fired their OC because of a special teams blunder.
