I’m not spoiler tagging this thread for now, cuz as it constitutes a biography of sorts, theres really not whole lot to “spoil” beyond how well the filmmakers pulled it off, which is subjective. here’s the one spoiler, posted mostly cuz I’m bored and want ot play with the spoiler function.
Ian Curtis killed himself in 1980
Just saw this last night and really liked it.
I was too young to have been interested in Joy Division the first time around, but have been obsessed since i became aware of them (15 years ish now?).
I do remember the whole Mad-chester/Happy Mondays/Hacienda scene, (not personally, but thru NME and what not). The movie was a music geeks wet dream, inside joke after inside joke, but always good natured.
The guy who played Ian Curtis was fantastic, and reinforced what i’ve always thought. Joy Division deserve thier own movie, not just to be the first act of somebody elses movie.
Also, beyond a very brief scene and a couple of brief mentioned, nothing much is made of New Order, or for that matter, anything about the scene post JD except for the happy mondays. and the 80’s seemed to have been skipped over entirely.
I realize they weren’t “Factory Bands”, but weren’t, say, the Smiths (who get only a- GREAT- one liner) or the Stone Roses every bit as important to the evolution of Manchester, musically, as the Happy Mondays?
Chris (tell me now how should i feel)
I’m bitching a bit, but generally i liked it.
