28% of Oklahomans who test positive for COVID-19 now end up in hospital, health experts say

“Almost 28% of people who have COVID-19, a positive test, in the last 14 days are being admitted. And that’s a really high admission rate,” Kendrick said.

So that sounds like a high rate, but does anyone have any rough idea of what % of people who have covid are getting tested?

I thought during the peak of Covid, it was calculated that the true infection rate was probably 3x higher than the diagnosed infection rate. So maybe 30 million Americans got a positive test, but it was closer to 100 million who actually had had Covid.

Would those be rough numbers for the Oklahoma situation, maybe 1/3 of people who have covid bother to get a test, so maybe the hospital admission rate is closer to 9%? Or because a state like Oklahoma is likely full of Covid denialists, i wonder if the rate of diagnosed cases vs actual cases is higher than 3:1

What was the hospital admission rate for the original covid relative to the diagnosis rate?

The test positivity rate has skyrocketed to 14%. That suggests that only some people are getting tested, likely those who are pretty sick. Their vaccination rate is not very good.

It’s going to be hard to come up with specific numbers, but there are a lot of effects that are going to push the test positivity rate up.

Pre-vaccine availability, people who took Covid seriously or were associated with institutions who took Covid seriously were getting tested a lot more. They might get tested weekly for work, or they might get tested before or after traveling. There were a lot of routine tests done where it was kind of expected that the result would be negative.

That population is now largely vaccinated, and isn’t going to be doing tests.

The remaining population that’s unvaccinated and probably has some not-very-aligned-with-reality views about Covid are not getting tested regularly. A lot of them probably aren’t getting tested until they require some kind of medical attention, at which point a doctor is going to order the test. Not that surprising that a large fraction of people who are sick enough with Covid to seek medical attention end up hospitalized.

Hubs denied having COVID for 2 weeks after he started feeling bad. The only reason he got tested was because he was too sick to keep arguing with me. He was really sick for 3 weeks and kinda sick for another 2, but didn’t get hospitalized. If I hadn’t thrown that fit and dragged his stupid ass into the car, he never would have gotten tested.

I’m really sure he’s not alone.
