My SO and I have just finished watching 28 Weeks Later, the sequel to 28 Days Later. I have to admit that I started watching it from under the seat in front of me at the deserting-husband-meets-deserted-wife scene, it was so gory - but at the end, my SO and I ask: how did the virus reach France? Was it already in the Tunnel or was it Andy the carrier? My SO reckons that the French would have sealed the Tunnel shut tighter than a nun’s nasty to stop the pesky infected Brits invading. What thoughts Dopers? :dubious:
I haven’t seen this movie, but let me get this straight: only Britian was wiped out, not the rest of the world? That kind of kills alot of the ‘we are possibly the last survivors’ feel to the first movie.
Didn’t the first movie mention that there had been reports of the virus in Paris, New York, etc? How did this movie explain that, or did they just gloss over it?
Either way, that ending sounds kind of awesome. Apocalyptic movies are always much better when the humans lose.
Just saw it tonight with my buddy. Here’s my take:
We already know from Andy’s mom that it’s possible to carry rage but be asymptomatic, and from the closeup of Andy’s eye that appears to be what happened to him. The final scene shows the helicopter flying away from England over the White Cliffs of Dover, evidently on the way to France. Then we get a shot of the interior of the helicopter and it appears to be in disarray, followed by zombies running amuck in France. My take is that Andy was carrying, infected others when they land in France, including perhaps the pilot and Tam, and everything goes to hell from there. And I agree that the Chunnel would have been sealed off tight as soon as someone realized what happened in the first movie.
Using your “Zombie Logic Handbook”, its obvious that an infection that is shown in these two movies could never breach a land barrier such as the ocean without the way they explained it in the movie. A quick infection, quick zombie, could never make it to another continent by plain or by boat (Well, I guess it could be REALLY REALLY unlikely). So, those reports would have just been plain hysteria.
[spoiler] The son had it. He was a carrier just like mum. Thats what they were talking about the gene traits. His eyes were a dead set for hers. Both had this recessive trait therefore they might be carriers.
In the subway, when you see his eyes turn red and his sister says he’s fine, you know he is infected. But she didn’t know why her mother was still alive. She didn’t know that he could be a carrier. She must have assumed he was ok. But we knew better!It appears that very few people knew just what he could have been.

So this really only leaves North and South America, Australia, and Antartica. Possibly Africa if we assume Zombies don’t like the desert!
There’s a part maybe 2/3 of the way through the first movie where Cilian Murphy’s character is talking to a soldier, and the soldier explains that he’s sure Britain has been quarantined. The soldier is quite despairing, moaning about how how in the rest of the world is enjoying the movies and normal life, they’re stuck fighting the infected in Britain. Shortly after that, Cilian Murphy is laying on his back in a forest and sees what is presumably a passenger aircraft flying over.
Personally, I think it would have been great if the movie had ended with that shot.
