3-5 more days? sigh

I had my first experience with the Knoxville bus system this morning. Normally, I’d just drive to work, but since my car is having issues, well…I couldn’t. So, I paid $1 each way to go to work.

While I was at work, I figured I’d check my home voice mail and see if the fellas at the car place had gotten the parts they needed. I had a voice mail from them (and I’m not irritated with them by any means) letting me know that they have to order the parts from Suzuki and it’ll be 3-5 working days before they arrive.

What are these parts that are so dear? They’re the tire studs that the lug nuts go on to hold the tires on. See, there was a vibration in my tire. I’d described it to them and they said it sounded like the tires just needed to be balanced. After I took a friend to the airport Friday, it felt so bad that I decided it needed to go in then to be balanced rather than wait until after I got back from Chattanooga. Well, it’s a good thing I went in, since the tread was seperating from the tire wall - there was a big 'ol ugly bald lump thing in the tire tread, and it could well have blown on my way to or from Chattanooga.

But the tire studs were problematic as well. Actually, I know that anything associated with tires and this car becomes problematic. They didn’t have the ones that the tires needed, and 1 on the front, 2 on the back were bad and needed to be replaced. So they to adjust some that were a slightly off size, but that didn’t work. So today, they called Suzuki, and they learned that it’s not a part that the dealership keeps in stock (probably because it’s not used that often). So they’re being ordered. So I’ll have no car until Thursday or Friday…perhaps longer, depending on when the pieces get in.

I’m going to go stir crazy. Or get great legs from the hike up and down the hill.

My circumstances allow apathy to win out on car repairs (to some degree). I do most of my work myself (on my 1987 Toyota 4x4), but there are some things I just can’t do, like engineering new electrical switches.
So I’ve learned to live with my problems. I just can’t use my windshield wipers. They won’t wipe because the switch is busted, which is much more frustrating than it should be, since the switch died right after (or coinciding with, I coulda fried it) I fixed the windshield washer fluid pump. But luckily, I live in the desert (Ok, that’s gotta be the ONLY time in my life I have ever uttered that particular phrase), so it’s a relative non-issue. The interesting thing is, if you’re going over about 50mph, you don’t really need windshield wipers (at least in a light rain), because the water all gets blown off. It’s at lower speeds that make it hard to see. Like in traffic.
And for about a month I haven’t had a passenger side window (I broke it myself, and it was outside of the vehicle, I was - once again - attempting to repair it. Sense a trend?). But again, because of my location I don’t really care…
Oh, and I require the use of two flathead screwdrivers to open my hood.

Of course, I wouldn’t be able to do this if my studs were bad…
